Day 6 of teaching your dog from scratch: leave it 🐾

If leave it only works when you see the distraction before your dog does, it is not leave it. It is just you being fast.

Build it in stages instead: closed hand, lowered hand, open hand, dropped treats, distance, then name it. Five perfect reps before every step up.

Day 5 of Teaching Your Dog From Scratch 🚪

Want a dog that won't walk out an open door without your permission? That's not luck, it's a skill you build. We started on leash at the threshold, practiced stopping there, then I stepped out and rewarded him for choosing to stay. Every time he tried to follow, I marked it, brought him back, and made the next rep easier. Then we layered in distractions, me stepping out of sight, and finally went off leash.

Now if the door gets left open, I know he's staying right there. 🐾

Day 4 of Teaching Your Dog From Scratch! 🚨

Your dog isn't ignoring you outside, they're over threshold. Too close and no "sit" gets through. The fix is distance, not more commands. Find where they notice the trigger but can still look at you. Train there, then close the gap over weeks.
