We get it….roosters have a reputation for being loud, aggressive, or just downright obnoxious. But on a true pasture-raised farm, a good rooster isn’t a nuisance. He’s the reason we can offer you high-quality, pasture-raised eggs!

Let’s hope this hot and humid weather eases up, and we’ll resume regular granola production. It’s been too hot in the kitchen lately to hover over a hot stove.

📸 Who doesn’t love a good throwback!

When I was around 10 years old, I began participating in the 4-H fair by showing various animals. I initially showed chickens, meat birds, goats, and llamas. One year, I even raised and showed a pig.

Growing up, I wasn’t particularly interested in all the animals. I joined 4-H simply because it was enjoyable to socialize with friends who shared a passion for animal husbandry. However, that was about the extent of my excitement. Cleaning days were not exactly the most enjoyable time to be around me.

Fast forward to the present day, and I still have similar animals, and I’m thoroughly enjoying how each one contributes to the overall harmony of our household. We initially started with horses because I had boarded them in St. Clair County, and when we were searching for our next home, relocating them to our place became a priority.

Around the time of the COVID pandemic, we got into chickens. The final push was the egg shortage. It’s incredible how all these bird flu outbreaks and diseases occurred within such a short period of time! Crazy!

Then, we decided to get quail. Harwell has been allergic to chicken eggs, and we discovered that he could have quail eggs. This sparked our journey into quail farming.

Lastly, I clearly wanted a new challenge. So, we decided to get Angora goats. I use the fiber produced by these goats and collaborate with a Michigan fiber mill to process it into yarn and roving. I’m currently learning how to spin myself and aim to eventually spin my own yarn. For now, I’ll continue my learning process and seek assistance along the way.

Do people do vision boards anymore?

I started working on this just as a way to organize my thoughts, but then I thought this might be interesting to people who follow our journey here. I also think it's fun for you to see where your dollars are going when you choose to support our business.

I am wanting to update our electrical in the barn, mainly adding more lights especially before winter. Unfortunately, as we've been updating this old farmhouse we have exhausted our electrical panel and to add more, we would need to change it out entirely.

We have a brushy area in front of our house and eventually I would like to brush hog all the smaller trees and make that side an orchard. This is also where I would like to install our bees. Hopefully bees will be coming this spring! Just need everyone to stay heathy this spring.

On the other side of the driveway, I would love to add another pasture and get some sheep. I've learned that I need to blend mohair (goats fiber) with sheep wool in order to make the products I would like to offer. However in order to do this we would also need a lean-to, troughs and feeders. Not cheap!

We are also looking at putting in some nice signage down by the street for the farm. That way when we hold events or people are looking for our farm stand, they know where to go.

I can only dream, but I think at this point we are starting to need a tractor. We've been doing everything by hand or with a tiny riding lawn mower and it's just not working or we're breaking the lawn mower.

Another more manageable thing on the list is getting the new waterers and feeders for the chicken coop. I've been looking for something that is easier and stays clean and it seems like the Omlet brand is pretty good - give me feedback if you have used it before!

Another expensive idea floating in my head is starting up some more breed specific coops. I just recently hatched out some silkies that have great lines and I would like to keep that going. I've also been looking into doing the same for some Welsummers. But that's two coops and a lot of money!

In the meantime, I will continue building my gardens and providing space for all our pollinators!
