Same breed, but differences explained...

Field Golden vs Show Golden: same breed, but generations of selective breeding for different goals can create noticeably different dogs. 🐕✨

Field-bred Golden Retrievers are typically selected with working ability in mind. They often have leaner, lighter frames, longer legs, shorter coats, and a strong drive to run, retrieve, swim, and work alongside their handler. Their athletic build can make them well suited for hunting, field trials, and other active pursuits.

Show-bred Goldens are generally selected more heavily for conformation to the breed standard. They often appear broader and stockier, with heavier bone, fuller coats, and broader heads. Many are also bred with companionship and show-ring temperament in mind.

These aren't two separate breeds, and individual dogs can vary considerably. A Golden's appearance, energy level, and personality depend on genetics, breeding lines, training, and environment.

Both ultimately share the qualities that made the Golden Retriever so loved: intelligence, trainability, affection, and an enthusiasm for being part of the family. ❤️

Bo and me running the land portion of Started on Saturday the 15th, with a water shot thrown in. Bo is SUCH a BEAUTIFUL dog. He has his dad's drive and mom's marking ability. He is a joy to work with!! On Sunday, the 16th, he earned his Started Hunting Retriever title!!

Lunch with Indigo (aka Mr Blue) using a puzzle to keep the brain thinking. Used some kibble first to do a little training on sit, down, and heel with walking while he is hungry (just 5-10 minutes) and ended on a positive note. Now he's ready for a nap!

Happy National Dog Day 2026 with Cassie (age 6), Teddi (age 5), Izzy (age2) and Indy/Indigo (age 14 weeks). Indy will be going to his new home next week.

Madison was THE dog. Even now, with her crossing the Rainbow Bridge over five years ago, both Jan and I can tear up when we think about her. We really need to create a webpage on the site for that VERY SPECIAL dog.

Not only was Maddie a certified Pet Therapy animal through Pet Partners, she was a Dockdog's National Champion in 2010, having won the Junior Division on Dan's BIRTHDAY no less!!

For now. This is a book written by our very good friend Joellyn Dahlin based on a very real interaction on a pet therapy visit with Maddie, her handler, and a very upset young lady.
