Dog training is full of myths based on antiquated, inaccurate understanding of neuroscience and how dogs evolved specifically to live with humans. We are not an extension or replacement for their pack. Itās something entirely different. Thatās why dogs have evolved to have more facial expressions than a chimpanzee. They donāt need those to interact with other dogs. They use them to elicit chemical responses in us. Itās specific to forming relationships with people.
Learning with a dog requires understanding how their brains actually work - and how our brains respond to them. Itās understanding how they process details and tasks differs from us and how to use that to our advantage. How to engage both the left and right brain - and knowing what common training methods can shut down the brain. How to create filters in the brain for focus and learning. How to elicit the right chemicals to reduce inflammation, address behavioral challenges, and accelerate learning.
Training is not about dominance and submission. Itās not about getting fed, housed, rewarded, or avoiding correction. Itās not about constant drills, or whether or not you use food, clickers, or ecollars. Itās not about doing what trainers before us tell us to do.
Itās about the brain. The connections. The Neuroplasticity. Itās about humility and respect for the complex evolution of the domesticated canine that we have oversimplified for far too long and are just now starting to understand.
