This is a a reminder post about boundaries and basic respect…. FYI “Being home” does not mean “being available.”
Working from home does not mean I have unlimited free time, no meetings, no deadlines, no responsibilities, or that anyone is entitled to “five minutes of my day” simply because I happen to be physically present in my house.
I was recently met with the argument that, because I’ve described myself as being home “virtually 24/7,” I should obviously be able to squeeze someone in for “just five minutes.”
That attitude is completely and 110% unacceptable.
My availability is NOT determined by the fact that my car is in the driveway. MY TIME is still MY time… and furthermore MY home is still MY home. If you think that repeatedly questioning, challenging, or attempting to guilt me into making myself available after I have already communicated that I am not then you are being disrespectful. PERIOD.
A “no, I’m not available” should be enough.
It doesn’t require an explanation.
It doesn’t require a negotiation.
And it certainly doesn’t require me to justify how I spend every minute of my day.
Please show some respect for people’s boundaries the first time they communicate them. Being accessible is a courtesy—not an obligation. I provide a service I am not a servant!
