This week we took in 4 cats, 9 dogs, and 4 puppies. Five of these pets came into our shelter because their owners could no longer care for them, two were returned, and the rest were transferred in from other local shelters. Pictured is a peek of a few of the pets who came into our shelter this week.

All animals coming into our facility are vet checked, spayed or neutered, vaccinated according to their age, and microchipped before they will be made available for adoption. Some animals may have been adopted this week and others — especially puppies, kittens, and their moms may also need time in foster care, but keep checking our adoption gallery here: https://rvspca.org/availability/adopt/ to see when they become available!

No pet guardian ever wants to face the stress of a missing pet.

Yet even the most devoted and attentive pet parents can find themselves in this unexpected and stressful situation. This July Fourth, please remember that fireworks and summer storms can easily frighten pets and cause them to bolt, even if they are normally calm and well-behaved.

If you or someone you know ever find yourselves in this unfortunate situation, don’t panic!

We have put together a Lost Pet Action Plan so you can take action quickly should you ever lose your beloved pet.

Before summer slips away, there’s still time to make a difference at the Roanoke Valley SPCA!

As the days get a little shorter and we head into a new season, our animals still need people willing to share their time, energy, and talents. Whether you’re a dog person, a cat person, or someone who loves capturing special moments behind the camera, there’s a place for you on our volunteer team.

We’re currently looking for:

Dog Enrichment Volunteers — Walk dogs and spend quality time with our pups through play and engagement, providing enrichment, exercise, and socialization.

Cat Enrichment Volunteers — Spend time socializing with our feline friends and provide enrichment to keep them happy, healthy, and engaged.

Event Volunteers — Help the RVSPCA with tabling at community events throughout the year and spread the word about our mission.

Dorado’s Story: When Everything Changed in a Matter of Hours

Hi everyone, my name is Dorado. I’m just a 6-month-old little girl who came to the shelter last Tuesday. At my first medical exam, everything looked great. My surgery incision site was a little crusty around the edges, which the staff cleanup for me, but it was closed, dry, and healing just fine. I was even supposed to be ready for adoption by the end of the week!

But then Friday came.

Shelter staff noticed I was sneezing, so just to be safe, they moved me into the Cat Isolation room in case I was developing an upper respiratory infection.

By Saturday morning, they could hear me before they even opened the door.

I was open-mouth breathing.

And everyone knows that a cat breathing with her mouth open is an EMERGENCY.

The shelter's after-hours medical team was contacted, and the decision was immediate: “Get her to Emergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of Roanoke (EVSS) right away.”

I was rushed to EVSS, where I was immediately placed in oxygen therapy, which I needed for hours. I received multiple saline nebulization treatments, antibiotics, and a whole lot of diagnostic testing—bloodwork, f***l testing, panleukopenia testing, X-rays, and more—to figure out what was happening and how to save me.

For several days, I was really, really sick.

But nobody gave up on me.

After fighting through it all, I was finally released Monday. And there was one more little miracle waiting for me—someone at EVSS fell in love with me and is now fostering me while I continue my recovery with plans to adopt me!

But surviving came with a $2,186.00 emergency veterinary bill.

Now I need your help.

I may only be six months old, but I have already learned just how quickly a happy day can turn into a fight for your life. I was supposed to be looking for my “person”. Instead, I was fighting to breathe.

Please consider making a donation toward my veterinary bill. Even a few dollars can make a difference and help the shelter continue to say YES when another animal like me needs emergency care.

I fought hard to make it through.

Now I’m asking you to help me finish the fight.

Rosie was adopted from our shelter a few months ago, so we were thrilled to get this wonderful update from her adopter: "Rosie is adjusting well to her new life! She is so snuggly and cuddly and is such a sweet angel. Since being home, she’s come out of her shell and is very playful and occasionally gets the zoomies, which are fun to watch. She is very vocal and loves to chat, and she will never say no to a scratch under her chin. She is my study buddy and loves to nap in my lap. I am so happy she is in my life."

Do you know about our Transitional Foster program?

It's a temporary foster program that gives families affected by life-changing situations the ability to get back on their feet without the fear of being separated from their family pets.

The last thing you'd want if you're fleeing domestic violence, facing homelessness, or need to be hospitalized is to lose your pet too. By placing pets in temporary homes, we can allow their guardians time to get back on their feet.

We are always in genuine need of transitional foster homes! If you are willing to open your home to a pet in need while their family gets back on their feet, please fill out a foster application on our website: https://rvspca.org/foster/become-a-foster/
