Angels of Assisi Changing the definition of an animal shelter by offering services to benefit the community’s pets and the people who love them.

Community Pet Clinic: Mon-Sat 8:30am-6pm
Adoption Center: Daily 12-6pm

Help is here. Angels of Assisi is changing the role of an animal shelter to include resources, programs, and services to benefit the pets in our communities and the people who love them. We are an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southwest Virginia and West Virginia. Along with our Adoption Center and

Farm Sanctuary, we offer a Community Pet Clinic, Rural Veterinary Care, Cruelty Investigations, Disaster Response, and a Safety Net Program for those needing temporary help due to domestic violence or emergency situations.

Bringing home a new pet is one of the most rewarding experiences there is, and it's important to remember that many animals need time to decompress after shelter life. Adjusting to a new home takes patience, consistency, and realistic expectations.

The 3-3-3 Rule is a helpful guideline for understanding that transition. During the first few days, your new companion may be nervous, overwhelmed, or unsure. Over the next few weeks, they'll begin learning your routine and settling into daily life. And after a few months, you'll often start to see their true personality shine as they realize they're safe, loved, and finally home.

Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment. While our Adoption Promise means we will take back any animal adopted from us if needed, our goal is always a forever home and a forever bond. The time, patience, and grace you invest during those first few months can make all the difference in building a lifetime of love and companionship!

June is and Pepito is the perfect reminder of how much joy one tiny shelter kitty can bring! Pepito's journey started last December when he was found outside alone as a tiny kitten with a ruptured eye. After a successful enucleation and time spent healing in a loving foster home, he found his perfect person. Pepito is now the happy greeting face at Misfit Beauty Club!

His human shared the sweetest update from his first 3 months post-adoption:

"Did I hit the shop cat lottery or what?! Pepito has very much made himself at home from day one, showing very little nervousness about…well…anything! Curiosity courses through his veins and he is always finding something new to explore in the salon. Pepito has yet to meet a stranger, greeting everyone who walks through our doors. He shocks us all the time at how friendly and confident he is. He absolutely loves to be blow dried (demands it, actually) and is obsessed with water. He was basically born for this job and he’s easily Misfit Beauty Club’s favorite employee hands down. Productivity may be at an all time low, but we are never bored with this little guy around. He was the exact little man we needed! Getting to love him is a treat everyday. ❤️"

Some very happy adoptions this past week! Jeter found his perfect pair exactly three months after arriving from Regional Center for Animal Care & Protection, another Vieques Humane Society pup headed to her forever home, staff and fan favorite Chili found his person, and Sweet Pea was adopted after a 2 months of waiting. Thank you and congratulations to all the new families! We couldn't be happier for them all as they start their new lives.

🚨 Mission: Get Bitsy Adopted Before June 20!🚨
On the 20th of this month, Bitsy will have been with us for 7 months, and we’d love nothing more than to celebrate that milestone with an adoption. That’s 212 days waiting for a home, on top of time spent at another local shelter before coming to us. And Bitsy is just 1½ years old, so she’s spent most of her life in a kennel.

A little more about Bitsy: This 45-pound sweetheart is known for her goofy eyes, floppy feet, happy smile, and love of belly rubs. She’s smart, treat-motivated, and enjoys roughhousing with her chosen dog friends.

Meeting new people, especially men, can be a little scary for Bitsy. She may bark, cower, or try to hide at first, but give her a few minutes, a little space, a couple treats, and you’ll see her begin to relax. Once she realizes you’re her friend, the sweet, affectionate personality we all know shines through.

As you can see in this video, Bitsy has been working hard with Sam at Dragon’s Tooth Dog Training to build confidence and comfortably explore new things. She’s made great progress and both Sam and Bitsy would love to continue that journey after adoption.

Let’s make sure Bitsy spends this summer in a home, not a kennel. Stop by, take her for a walk, and see if this special girl is the missing piece of your family! Or, share with someone you may know who is looking for a new companion. Help us find Bitsy’s person before June 20!

Earlier this week, a kind Samaritan brought us a box labeled "FREE KITTENS" that had been dumped in Garden City. Four absolutely beautiful kittens were inside. A little timid at first, but sweet and trusting nonetheless.

Receiving boxes of kittens isn't uncommon during kitten season. As more kittens arrive, we rely on our community to help us give them the care they need until they're ready for forever homes.

Want to help all the vulnerable babies this season? You can become a member of our Itty Bitty Kitty Committee (IBKC) and foster kittens until they're old enough to find their forever homes, join our monthly giving program to help support the IBKC, or donate supplies for kittens in our care. Every little bit helps these tiny lives get the happy ending they deserve! You can find out more info at the link in our bio.

Update on Princess! We are absolutely blown away by how many people have been invested in Princess and her dad’s story. Thank you to everyone who has shared, donated, and sent well wishes!

Princess has been with us for a couple weeks now and we’re happy to report that she’s doing well. She still has a road to recovery ahead of her, but we’re committed to keeping her safe and helping her stay with the family who loves her. Her dad comes to visit her regularly and brings her food and goodies while she heals and is monitored here.

We’ll be sharing more updates soon. Thank you all for being part of Princess’ journey. ❤️

The lengths people go to for the animals they love never cease to inspire us. This caring man arrived at our Community Pet Clinic front door at 4am to camp out in the hopes that we could help his family member and loyal companion, Princess. He had witnessed her being hit by a car and would do anything to help his best friend.

When our veterinary team arrived that morning, they immediately brought her in to assess the situation. With very limited resources, her owner came to us for help, and we were determined to do everything we could for them both.

We'll be sharing Part 2 of Princess' story soon! ❤️

🌟 June's Angel of the Month is Jordan 🌟
Jordan has been a dedicated kennel attendant for years and we're so grateful for everything he does for our Adoption Center animals. His kindness and compassion shine through every day, whether he's caring for our pets or helping his coworkers.

Jordan truly loves every pet that comes through our doors and works hard to make sure they feel safe, comfortable, and cared for while they wait for their new families. He's a genuine joy to work with and we're lucky to have him on our team!
