🐾 ENGAGEMENT IS EVERYTHING

Working with this long haired German Shepherd (Ralph) on loose-leash walking and engagement.
We’re teaching him to:

• Walk calmly without pulling
• Sit automatically when I stop
• Check in and look to me for direction

Every time he chooses to engage or look at me, I mark it with a simple “YES!” This lets him know he made the right choice.

Small moments of engagement build better communication, focus, and a stronger bond between dog and handler. 🐾

🐕 WHAT IS LEASH REACTIVITY?

Does your dog turn into a completely different dog the moment they see another dog on a walk?

Barking. Lunging. Pulling. Growling.

🚫 It doesn't always mean they're aggressive.
In many cases, leash reactivity comes from:

• Frustration from not being able to greet
• Fear or uncertainty
• Feeling trapped by the leash
• Lack of confidence around distractions

The leash removes a dog's ability to create space or approach freely, which can lead to an emotional reaction.

🐾 7 Days. One Completely Different Dog. 🐾

This 5-month-old German Shepherd came to Murphy's Paw & Co. for a 7-day Board & Train program focused on building structure, engagement, and clear communication.

One of the biggest struggles we addressed was feeding time. Like many young dogs, She had learned that rushing the food bowl was acceptable because no boundaries or threshold training had been established.

Through consistent training, we taught him to sit calmly, wait patiently, and only access his food when released. This simple exercise creates impulse control, respect for boundaries, and a calmer state of mind.

Throughout his stay, we worked on:
✔ Sit ✔ Stay ✔ Heel ✔ Touch ✔ Crate ✔ Under ✔ Threshold Training ✔ Inside & Outside Heel Turns ✔ Engagement & Focus Around Distractions.

A German Shepherd is not just a pet—it's a working breed. These dogs were bred to think, problem solve, and work alongside humans. Without structure, training, and clear boundaries, many behavioral issues begin to develop.

Training doesn't stop when the program ends. German Shepherds require ongoing guidance, consistency, and leadership to become the best version of themselves. When their mental and physical needs are met, they are some of the most loyal, obedient, and capable companions you'll ever own.

The difference after just 7 days was remarkable, but the real success comes from giving owners the tools to continue building on that foundation.

Dogs thrive on clarity and consistency — but a lot of owners accidentally make training confusing without realizing it.

One day it’s “come.” The next it’s “here.” Then it’s “sit down” instead of either “sit” or “down.”
To humans, those words may sound interchangeable. To your dog? They can mean completely different things.
