For hours, this baby hippo stayed beside his mother’s body, nudging her gently and crying for her to wake up.

He did not understand she was gone.

Rescuers from the Kenya Wildlife Service found the orphaned calf, now named Bumpy, on May 2, 2026, near Oloiden Resort in Naivasha, Kenya. According to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, his mother had likely died at least a day earlier, possibly during a territorial fight while protecting him.

But Bumpy never left her side.

When rescuers arrived, they found the tiny hippo desperately trying to get a response from the only comfort he had ever known.

In the wild, hippo calves stay extremely dependent on their mothers for years. Without them, survival is incredibly difficult.

After a complex rescue operation, Bumpy was flown to safety and transferred into the care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where caretakers immediately wrapped him in blankets, fed him warm milk, and stayed beside him through the night.

Now the little orphan who once cried beside his mother spends his days resting in caretakers’ laps, swimming in a small recovery pool, and falling asleep pressed tightly against the people helping him heal.

Rescuers say he constantly searches for closeness and comfort.

Sometimes grief looks the same in every species.

The need to be held.
The fear of being alone.
And the quiet relief when someone finally makes you feel safe again.

We’re now accepting donations for our annual spring garage sale fundraiser!

Donations can be left by the storage POD at the rear of the shelter (1170 Grove Wyandotte) 9a-7p daily (except Sundays).

Due to the street construction in front the shelter, the city of Wyandotte has graciously offered us the use of a the Yack Arena for the sale itself!
