We are reaching out to remind all of our community who have cats they wish to live long and healthy lives, to test for FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). These are two common viruses that affect cats and can impact their long-term health.
FeLV weakens a cat’s immune system and can lead to serious illness such as infections, anemia, or certain cancers. It is mainly spread through close contact, like grooming, sharing food bowls, or from mother to kitten.
FIV also affects the immune system, making it harder for cats to fight off infections over time. It is most commonly spread through bite wounds, and often from fights with other cats.
Many cats with FeLV or FIV may look healthy for months or even years, so testing is the only way to know their status.
Knowing each cat’s FeLV and FIV status helps us:
-Protect healthy cats from exposure
-Provide appropriate medical care and monitoring
-Make informed decisions about introducing new cats into the home
-Reduce the risk of disease spread between cats
Testing is simple and can be done with a small blood sample that costs less than $70. If you have multiple cats, it’s important that each one is tested so we can ensure the safest and healthiest environment for all of them.
If you have any questions or would like to schedule testing, please contact us –we’re here to help.
