A large percentage of our customers come to us after recently having lost their Labrador or canine companion. It’s a natural part of grieving to want to not replace, but fill the void of that kind of loss. We have counseled many people through the process and I often say that bringing home a new puppy does not replace the loss, but rather, it allows you to expand your heart.
We also get some families who decide to bring home a puppy as their older dog has started to slow down. I got a lot of questions about whether this is a benefit to one or both dogs. The benefits are countless on both sides. For the puppy, they get a mentor and an instant best friend. The puppy learns when and where to use the bathroom, what’s appropriate behavior and how to interact with their new family. For the older dog, he or she gets the benefit of youth and more often than not, it will invigorate the older dog. Many times families will report back to me saying there is much more s***k in their older dog after the puppy came home.
It can also help when the inevitable happens and the older dog goes onto his or her greater reward. It helps the family by having the puppy there with them and allows the stability of that companionship.
Thank you so much, to Jaime and her lovely family for sending me these pictures and allowing me to share. This is Griffin and Buffalo. Buffalo is the puppy and he is truly in love with his big brother! 🤎🤎
