MJ Ranch Horses and Home Live simple. Spend smart. Play hard. Sharing what I've learned from seventeen years of professional horse training... So you don't have to make mistakes I did.

A life on our little ranch. Product recommendations that I love for myself and the family. Horses are my passion and have been for a long time. My dad bought my first pony for my 5th birthday. At one point I was told this is just a phase ***cue hysterical laughter***

I grew up going to local horse shows, gymkhanas, playing polocrosse, going on trail rides and pack trips, and occasionally going on cattle drives. That led to me applying for and attending the Equine Sciences program at Colorado State University. After taking the colt starting class and interning and working as an assistant trainer, it was time for me to go on my own. For along time my business was a side-gig of starting colts. Since my experience in teaching and giving lessons has grown, and I am now able to call this my full time job, I now spend most of my time coaching, giving lessons, and teaching people how to help themselves which helps their horses. I now raise mules as part of the business and we recently added a gypsy mare to our breeding stock. The breeding side of our business focuses on breeding gentle, family-prospects. Having kids of my own has really changed my outlook in making sure I'm putting disposition first in all of the foals we breed for. I still show in the Versatility Ranch horse classes, offer training services for approved horses, specialize in lessons and coaching cow work (but also do general riding), give clinics and youth riding lessons, offer stud breeding services from our Quarter horse stallion and Mammoth Jack, and judge horse shows. I don't take outside colts to start anymore, but I do have a good reference upon request :)

Most training questions come down to a matter of time. Money and effort. Horses are naturally suited for things. Initially, but you can teach them to be acclimated to different jobs and people in situations. It just takes more time and effort and money than some.

It's easier to have a tight belt and loosen it than it is to tighten the belt. Once behaviors have been established, I didn't even learn that from a horse training, I learned that from teaching high schoolers, but it still applies to horse training.

I don't want the physical maintenance to impact or interfere with what I am trying to implant in my cult's brain as the foundation. I do also think that there's something to be said about walking around with your c**t. At the end of a workout that helps them become more patient and not anticipate going up to the barn.... But either way, walking on foot with a c**t to cool them off is the greatest c**t training hack. I have ever discovered.

It's kind of like when you put
A leash or sweater on a cat 🤣🤣🤣 he eventually got over it. But he definitely took a maneuver straight out of the mule/donkey playbook.

This is my favorite way to teach babies. How to load it works? So freaking good, i've never had any of the babies that I have raised, have trouble with trailers, because this is what we do for the first couple of years of their life.

The silverware that won't break the bank, even if you have to replace it. Multiple times and it still looks good because the kids and the elves are in cahoots together.
