Unrealistic Expectations of Unnatural Horsemanship

Everything we do with horses is unnatural:

Feeding, space restriction, seclusion, training, riding, trailering, and routine care, but they’re supposed to know, right?

Let’s take working at liberty, for example.

That connection and undeniable bond that a horse shares with a herd, and that we see the essence of captured all around the world by extraordinary people, that natural instinct to follow, flow, and forgive. It’s an undeniable desire that we all want to feel.

Well, I’ll tell you a little secret…It doesn’t start with taking the halter off.

We all want someone to listen, and we all want to feel understood. Well, so do our horses.

So, when we throw them into a situation with unrealistic expectations in an unnatural environment, all they feel is misunderstood.

Awareness. Structure. Balance. Integrity.

An integrated system working together to turn a canvas into a dance floor.

It all starts with the question:

“Am I safe?”

The nervous system is complex, but when we approach it as a system to understand rather than a problem to solve, we open the door to the brain and body working together in a harmonious rhythm through a continuous conversation.

Spending a week with Jillian Kreinbring and
Dr. Stephen Peters at Colorado State University, has been the most life changing shift in my understanding of horses.

To feel the confidence blossom and have answers to guide my equines to embody the language we are building together, is another realm of knowledge that has only just begun.
