Why Do Puppies & Kittens Need Booster Vaccines? 🐶🐱💉

Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is exciting—but keeping them protected means more than just one round of vaccines!

🍼 Young puppies and kittens receive antibodies from their mother through nursing. These maternal antibodies help protect them early in life, but they can also interfere with vaccines. We can’t always know exactly when those antibodies will decrease enough for a vaccine to work effectively.

💉 That’s why puppies and kittens receive a series of vaccines. Each dose helps increase the chance that their immune system develops strong, lasting protection once maternal antibodies have worn off.

📅 Why are the vaccines spaced out?
The timing between doses allows the immune system to respond appropriately while providing protection during a particularly vulnerable stage of life.

🐶 Puppies commonly receive a series of combination vaccines protecting against diseases such as parvovirus and distemper, along with other vaccines based on their lifestyle and risk.

🐱 Kittens commonly receive a series of combination vaccines protecting against diseases such as panleukopenia, herpesvirus, and calicivirus, with additional vaccines recommended based on age and lifestyle.

❤️ Completing the vaccine series is important! Even if your puppy or kitten has already received one or two vaccines, they may not yet have reliable protection against these serious diseases.

Your veterinarian will create a vaccination schedule based on your pet’s age, previous vaccines, lifestyle, health, and risk of exposure.

🐾 New puppy or kitten? Don’t skip those boosters! Their tiny bodies are counting on you. ❤️

🐾 What Are PVPs & Why Might Your Pet Need One Before Their Vet Visit? 💙

If your pet experiences fear, anxiety, or stress (FAS) at the veterinary clinic, you may have heard your veterinary team mention a PVP.

So, what exactly is a PVP?

PVP stands for “pre-visit pharmaceutical.” These are medications prescribed by your veterinarian to help reduce fear, anxiety, and stress before your pet arrives at the clinic.

🏠 Why give medication before the appointment?

For some pets, the stress of a veterinary visit begins long before they walk through our doors. They may become anxious when they see the carrier, get into the car, arrive in the parking lot, or simply recognize that they are going somewhere unfamiliar.

By giving an appropriate PVP ahead of time, we can help your pet arrive in a calmer state of mind, which can make the entire visit more comfortable.

🐶🐱 PVPs may be especially helpful for pets who:
• Tremble, hide, pant, drool, or vocalize during visits
• Become defensive or difficult to safely handle when frightened
• Have previously had a very stressful veterinary experience
• Become extremely anxious during travel or while waiting at the clinic
• Need procedures such as blood draws, nail trims, radiographs, or examinations that are difficult when they are highly stressed
• Have a history of escalating FAS with each veterinary visit

💊 PVPs aren’t about “knocking your pet out.”

The goal is generally to reduce anxiety—not simply make your pet sleepy. The specific medication, dose, timing, and combination are determined by your veterinarian based on your individual pet’s health, behavior, and the type of visit.

And sometimes, medication is only one part of the plan! 🐾

Our team may also use low-stress handling techniques, treats, distraction, quiet spaces, gentle restraint alternatives, and other Fear Free strategies to help your pet feel more comfortable.

✨ Why does this matter?

A pet who is extremely frightened may struggle to learn that the veterinary clinic is a safe place. Reducing that fear can help create more positive experiences and may make future visits easier.

If your pet has a history of being very fearful, anxious, or difficult to handle at the vet, please let us know when scheduling their appointment. We may be able to develop a plan before they arrive.

Because sometimes the kindest thing we can do for our patients is help them feel safe enough to receive the care they need. 💙🐾

August brings plenty of sunshine—but it also brings itchy pets! Just like people, dogs and cats can suffer from environmental allergies caused by pollen, grasses, weeds, mold, and even flea bites.

Common signs of allergies include:
🐶 Excessive scratching or licking
🐱 Chewing at paws
👂 Frequent ear infections or head shaking
❤️ Red, irritated skin
😣 Hair loss or hot spots

While it may be tempting to reach for over-the-counter allergy medications, many human allergy products can be unsafe for pets or may mask an underlying problem without treating the cause. Some medications can even be toxic depending on the ingredient or dosage.

If your pet is showing signs of allergies, the best first step is a veterinary examination. We can determine what’s causing the itching and recommend a safe, effective treatment plan tailored to your pet’s needs.

💚 Don’t let your furry family member spend the rest of summer uncomfortable. If you’ve noticed increased scratching, licking, or skin irritation, give us a call to schedule an appointment!

Have questions about what medications are safe for your pet? We’re always happy to help—just ask before giving any over-the-counter products.

Please be sure to keep your pets safely contained!

🐱 Parasite Prevention Isn’t Just for Outdoor Cats! 🐱

Did you know that BOTH indoor and outdoor cats are at risk for parasites year-round in Mississippi?

Mosquitoes, fleas, and other parasites thrive in our warm climate, even during the cooler months. Indoor cats can be exposed through open doors, windows, other pets in the household, or even parasites brought inside on our clothing and shoes.

Without consistent prevention, cats can be at risk for:
🦟 Heartworms
🪳 Fleas
🪱 Intestinal parasites such as roundworms and hookworms
👂 Ear mites

Many parasite infections can cause discomfort, illness, and in some cases serious health complications. The good news? Monthly prevention is a simple way to help protect your feline family member all year long.

In Mississippi, parasites don’t take a season off—so neither should prevention!

Not sure which parasite prevention is best for your cat? Give us a call. We’d be happy to help keep your furry friend protected and healthy every month of the year. ❤️🐾
