Hi! I’m Lore, the face behind Quill Canine Training, LLC. I’ve always been passionate about all things dog, but my real journey started when training the black lab in these photos, Ruthie. She became a student at a local dog school, which turned into me becoming a student as an apprentice once she had graduated! After completing my apprenticeship and going to several workshops and webinars, I made the jump to start my company in hopes to reach more dogs (and their people)!

As a q***r and disabled individual, it’s important to me that my clients feel seen, accepted, and accommodated in session. Dog training is just as much about the handler as it is about the dog!

If you’re interested in a session with me, my website link is in my bio! I hope to see you soon.

Want your dog to be a trick dog? I am SO excited to announce that I will be offering a trick dog class this March/April! Classes will be hosted at Dog Lovers Obedience School in the RVA area.

All owners must fill out the “new client form” on my website prior to booking. If you have any questions, shoot me an email!

What you can expect:
6 weeks of guided instruction on how to teach your dog tricks (some fun, some practical) 🐕

During the class, all the dogs will have a chance to show off their skills with a TKN (AKC trick dog novice) evaluation. Food lures can be used, and you have as many tries as you need for your dog to preform all 10 tricks! If you have a CGC title on record with AKC, you only need to preform 5 tricks! 🌟

Earn a ribbon to show off your dog’s skills 🏆

When talking about confidence building with my clients, I often split it into two categories: environmental confidence and social confidence. But what are they, and how do you build them?

-

Environmental confidence is your dog’s ability to remain calm, curious, and motivated in different environments, on different surfaces, with different sounds, and at different elevations. A dog with good environmental confidence is a dog that takes new experiences in stride, is happy to go out and explore, and can remain engage in new environments.

To build environmental confidence, your dog needs a strong history of exposure to a variety of experiences out in the world, not just in their home. Make unexpected noises and throw a party when your dog regains composure, lure your dog onto different surfaces (playgrounds are GREAT for this) and celebrate with high-value treats, take short trips to pet-friendly stores…get creative!

-

Social confidence, on the other hand, is your dog’s ability to confidently tackle new social situations with both people and dogs. They don’t need to be a social butterfly (neutrality is a beautiful quality!), but a socially confident dog can keep their composure when being handled by strangers, when meeting other well-behaved dogs, and feeling confident enough to give appropriate corrections to pushy dogs as needed.

To build social confidence, your dog needs consistent, intentional positive exposure to new people and well-mannered pups. Using the “touch” command to help your dog have more direction when greeting new people is a great place to start. When building social confidence, remember that you’re your dog’s best advocate! Step in BEFORE your dog has a perceived negative experience.

Your dog is always learning, every interaction you have with them is teaching them something. But are you teaching them the right thing, or sending mixed messages?

Here’s an example. When your dog jumps up on you and you tell them sweetly “no jumping” while using your hands to push them away, you’re not getting the right message across. Using a high-pitched voice is usually paired with rewards, and your hands are so positive (from feeding and petting) that any time you touch your dog you may accidentally be rewarding them as well. So when you’ve finally had enough and you shout “no jumping” in a firm tone, yes, you’re correcting your dog, but you’re also confusing them. Which history of reinforcement are they going to listen to: The accidental praise, or the correction?

The takeaway I want you to have, is that you need to be more clear with your dog. If you don’t want your dog jumping on you, use your body or your leash to get them off, not your hands. If you want your dog to leave something alone, don’t say “leave-it” in a fun tone. There is absolutely time for fun, rewards, play, etc., but only when your dog is behaving in a way you want them to remember being reinforced.

The holidays are an exciting (but stressful!) time for people, so imagine what it must be like for your dog! Guests coming over, yummy food in oven, games being played…how can you help your pup find calm in the chaos? I’ve got some tips for you below to set your dog up for success!

🦃 Set boundaries/rules and stick to them: if you don’t want your dog jumping up on strangers, don’t let them jump up on your friends! Consistency is important to avoid giving mixed-signals and confusing your pup.

🦃 Keep your dog on leash, tethered, crated, or on place (depending on what they can handle) when food is the center of attention: this will keep them from being a nuisance or worse, getting into something that will make them sick.

🦃 Prepare your dog to expect the unexpected: proofing commands with the 3 D’s (distance, distraction, duration) can help your dog understand that sit means sit, even if Aunt Bethany decides to flap her arms and gobble like a turkey!
