Today, we’re going to talk about one of my least favorite topics: breeders.
I’ll keep it simple. Far too many breeders contribute to the problems we face in animal welfare, and in more ways than one.
Overpopulation? Absolutely. That’s usually the first thing that comes to mind.
But what we don’t talk about nearly enough is what happens to the breeding dogs themselves.
What kind of life do they live? How many years do they spend producing litter after litter? What happens when they’re no longer useful? When they can no longer produce puppies or bring in money?
Far too often, they’re discarded. Given away. Dumped in shelters. Their value to the people who used them disappears, and suddenly, so does their home.
Meet Pebbles. 💔
Pebbles is an 8-year-old miniature schnauzer who spent years being bred over and over again. When she was no longer of use to her “owners,” she was given away.
Eventually, Pebbles ended up in a shelter with a mouth full of rotting, infected teeth. Years without basic dental care had left her unable to even eat kibble.
No vaccines. No proper veterinary care. No one looking out for HER.
She had spent years producing puppies for someone else, yet when she needed someone to care for her, there was no one there.
Well, we just couldn’t have that.
Yesterday, we scooped Pebbles up and welcomed her into rescue. This morning, our sweet girl was dropped off with our amazing veterinary team for a complete medical workup, vaccinations, spay, and a much-needed dental procedure with extractions.
And let me tell you something about Pebbles. Despite everything she has been through, she is an exceptionally sweet, loving little girl. She’s also an excellent passenger princess who has clearly mastered the art of riding sh***un. ❤️
Pebbles deserved better. She deserved to be loved for who she is, not for the puppies she could produce. She deserved basic medical care, a comfortable home, and people who would value her long after her breeding days were over.
Today, we get to change her story.
No more litters. No more being used.
From here on out, Pebbles gets to be somebody’s beloved little girl. And we cannot wait to help her find the forever home she should have had all along.
