Strong Paws October is for Pitties!
October is Pit Bull Awareness Month, a time dedicated to celebrating these loyal, loving, and often misunderstood dogs!
Unfortunately, "pit bull-type" dogs are among the most misrepresented and overlooked animals in shelters, largely due to long-standing myths that don't reflect their true nature. Let’s set the record straight:
Myth: They have "locking jaws."
Fact: There is no such thing as a "locking jaw" mechanism in any dog breed. This is an anatomical myth; their jaw structure is just like any other dog's.
Myth: They are inherently aggressive.
Fact: Aggression is not a breed trait. Like any dog, a pit bull’s temperament is shaped by training, socialization, environment, and individual personality—not their genetics alone.
Myth: They are easy to identify by sight.
Fact: "Pit bull" is not a breed, but an umbrella term for several breeds (like the American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, etc.) and mixed breeds. Studies have shown that even professionals frequently misidentify dogs based on appearance alone—often mislabeling many other breeds as "pit bulls."
Because of these misconceptions, these dogs often face longer stays in shelters and higher euthanasia rates compared to other breeds.
