The adoption fair was half a mile from the shelter, on the town square, and 12 of the dogs couldn't walk that far. Every October the shelter outside Staunton, Virginia, leashes up the dogs for the walk into town. The ones over 10 stay behind. Old legs won't make the half mile. So the old dogs spend fair day in the back kennels, and most of the town has never seen a single one of those 12.

Reuben was there that morning by accident. A hay farmer of 79, he'd come to drop off straw for the kennels. From the tailgate he watched the young dogs go out the gate in a line. Then he asked Kit, the volunteer signing for the straw, who was doing all the barking in back. Kit told him. "I've got a wagon," Reuben said. "Give me an hour."

He was back in 50 minutes on his tractor with the hay wagon behind. It still had the rails on from a church hayride, and he'd thrown on a sheet of plywood for a ramp. Loading took a while. The dogs went up the plywood slowly, some with a boost from behind, and settled against the bales. Six volunteers climbed on too and sat wherever a collar might need holding. Turnip, a 16-year-old hound, ended up on a bale by the rail.

Reuben pulled out onto Main Street and let the tractor crawl.

For the first block people only looked. Hay wagons aren't news there in October. Then a man outside the hardware store saw what was riding between the bales and hollered back through the door. A barber came out with his customer still in the cape.

On her break, a waitress was standing in front of the diner. She stepped off the curb and put her hand on Turnip's back as the wagon came by. Then she walked the rest of the way to the square without taking it off. Her boss came down the block looking for her. She told him she was going to need the rest of the day.

The wagon parked on the square between the puppy pen and the lemonade stand. By four o'clock three of the 12 had applications, and the one for Turnip had a coffee ring on it. Reuben brought the wagon back the next three Saturdays, fair or no fair. People started waiting on the curb. By the end of October eight of those dogs were asleep in houses around the county.

On the last Saturday the wagon came down Main Street with four dogs on it. A 16-year-old hound watched it go by from a folded apron on the bench outside the diner.

Who in your town would've walked out to that wagon?
