🐍 Ball Python Myth Busters — Welborn Exotics Edition 🐍
Ball pythons are endlessly fascinating, but they’re also victims of many misconceptions. Let’s separate fact from fiction! Check out these common myths—then share your own questions or experiences in the comments.
1️⃣ Myth: Ball pythons are “dangerous” or “aggressive.”
❌ Reality: These snakes are known for being incredibly gentle and calm. When frightened, they usually curl into a tight ball rather than strike. With consistent, gentle handling, most ball pythons become very tame and interactive.
2️⃣ Myth: They require too much work to maintain temperatures.
❌ Reality: Ball pythons do need a warm side and a cool side in their cage, but this is certainly not difficult to accomplish. Our preference is heat tape that is controlled by a thermostat, but their are other alternatives. Feel free to reach out for more information
3️⃣ Myth: They “need” to drink or swim daily.
❌ Reality: Ball pythons obtain most of their moisture from prey. They may soak in water occasionally during shedding or if they need to cool off, but they don’t need a large pool. A clean water bowl big enough for occasional soaking is sufficient.
4️⃣ Myth: They only eat live prey.
❌ Reality: Frozen-thawed rodents are a safer, more humane option and perfectly acceptable to most ball pythons—especially if you use proper thawing and warming techniques that mimic a live prey temperature. Live feeding isn’t necessary and can risk injury to your snake.
5️⃣ Myth: They’re “boring” or “unsocial.”
❌ Reality: Give them time and gentle, regular handling, and ball pythons can show curiosity and recognition. Many will tongue-flick to “smell” you, relax on your arm, or just enjoy exploring their keeper’s lap. They’re far from dull when you understand their behaviors.
