Health & Development Notes for Shih Tzu Puppies

Let's talk about: Narrow Nostrils & Teething

It is not uncommon for young Shih Tzu puppies to appear to have narrow nostrils during periods of growth and teething. Some puppies may snort, make additional breathing noises, or develop a small amount of clear nasal discharge during this stage.
Because the head and facial structures continue to mature throughout puppyhood, veterinarians will often recommend monitoring these puppies over time before making any decisions regarding treatment. In many cases, breathing improves as growth continues and teething is completed.
For this reason, puppies with narrow nostrils are frequently reevaluated later in development to determine whether the appearance and function of the nostrils have changed with maturity.
As always, puppies should remain active, playful, comfortable, and able to eat and exercise normally. Any puppy showing significant breathing difficulty or other concerning symptoms should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
Teething Changes
Teething can bring a variety of temporary changes, including increased chewing, drooling, mild gum irritation, and occasional nasal congestion. These symptoms are usually short-lived and resolve as the adult teeth erupt.
Most puppies continue to thrive throughout this stage and require nothing more than routine observation and supportive care.

🐾 A Little Note About Umbilical Hernias in Puppies 🐾

One question that occasionally comes up in the puppy world is about umbilical hernias.

An umbilical hernia appears at the belly button and occurs when a small amount of tissue pushes through a tiny opening in the abdominal wall. They can be present at birth or noticed shortly afterward and are seen in many breeds, including Shih Tzu.

The good news is that most umbilical hernias are small and cause no discomfort to the puppy. In many cases, they become smaller as the puppy grows, and if repair is ever needed, it can often be done safely during a routine spay or neuter procedure.

While larger or more complicated hernias can occasionally occur, these situations are uncommon and should always be evaluated by a veterinarian.

At Aleka Shih Tzu, we believe education helps families feel confident and informed. A small umbilical hernia is generally considered a minor structural fault rather than a health concern, and many puppies with small hernias go on to live completely normal, happy lives.

As always, we're happy to answer questions and discuss any findings openly with our puppy families. ❤️🐾
