As a locally owned and operated veterinary clinic, we provide compassionate, high-quality care for your pets with a personal touch. Desert Veterinary Clinic is recognized in the professional community as an innovative leader in veterinary medicine and surgery. We have been selected by the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine as a Guided Preceptorship Practice, which bestows s

tatus as an adjunct teaching facility. Veterinary students are assigned to our practice for part of their fourth year of study to gain experience in clinical veterinary medicine and business management. Veterinary technician students from Yakima Valley Community College may also spend a month with us during their final year of study to gain practical experience. We meet rigid standards in medicine, surgery, record keeping, and facilities and have received four-year accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association for our efforts. This is the highest possible level awarded and is based on inspection and review of a clinic's medical and surgical equipment, practice methods and business management. We are also proud that we have been chosen to provide veterinary health care for the Hanford Patrol K-9 Division.

Smoky skies aren't just hard on us—they can be hard on our pets, too. 🐾

As we have all noticed, smoke from the recent wildfires has settled into our area. Our hearts are with the families, first responders, veterinary teams, and communities affected by these devastating fires. We know many of our neighbors in the Spokane area have been impacted, and we're thinking of everyone as they work through this difficult time.

With wildfire smoke affecting our air quality, it's important to take a few extra precautions to keep our furry family members healthy.

Here are a few simple ways to help:

🐶 **Limit outdoor time.** Keep walks shorter and avoid strenuous exercise, especially during the smokiest parts of the day.

🏡 **Stay indoors when possible.** Keep windows and doors closed and run your air conditioning or an air purifier if you have one.

💧 **Encourage plenty of fresh water.** Staying well hydrated helps support your pet's respiratory system.

❤️ **Some pets need extra care.** Puppies, kittens, senior pets, flat-faced breeds (such as Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Persians), and pets with underlying heart or respiratory disease may be especially sensitive to wildfire smoke. Cats with asthma and dogs with chronic bronchitis are particularly at risk for flare-ups during smoky conditions, so we recommend keeping these pets indoors as much as possible and monitoring them closely.

🚩 Watch for signs that your pet may be struggling:
• Coughing
• Sneezing
• Wheezing
• Rapid or difficult breathing
• Excessive panting at rest
• Increased breathing effort
• Eye irritation or redness
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite

🐕 Reminder: If the air quality isn't healthy for you to exercise outside, it isn't healthy for your pet either.

For 53 years, you’ve been part of our story. Now, we want to make you part of our walls. 🤍🐾

As we rebuild Desert Veterinary Clinic, we’ve been thinking about what truly built this place.

It wasn’t the walls or the exam rooms. It was you.

It was the generations of families who trusted us with the pets they loved. The puppies and kittens we watched grow old. The patients we had the privilege of caring for throughout their lives. And the families who have walked through our doors for decades, along with those just becoming part of our story.

For 53 years, this community and the countless animals who have passed through our doors have made DVC what it is today.

So before the drywall goes up, we want to leave a little piece of you, our community, inside the walls. ❤️

We’re inviting our clients to leave the name of a beloved pet—past or present—or a short message for DVC in the comments below. Our team will handwrite your names and messages directly onto the studs of the clinic before the walls are finished.

Maybe it’s a pet you’ve had to say goodbye to, one who has been coming to DVC for years, or the newest member of your family. Whatever you choose, it will become a permanent part of the building you helped create. 🐾

Not to brag, but… our boss is kind of a big deal. 😏👏🐾

Last week, Dr. Thomè headed to Anaheim, California, for the AVMA Convention — and she wasn’t just there for the sunshine. ☀️

As Washington State’s delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates, Dr. Thomè spent part of the week representing veterinarians across our state. She also stepped into her newest leadership role as Chair of the House Advisory Committee — a position she was elected to by her peers and one we like to describe as sort of like being the Speaker of the House… but for veterinary medicine. No big deal. 😉

Between House of Delegates meetings and continuing education, she also found time to record an episode of the My Veterinary Life podcast, where she talked about leadership in veterinary medicine and something we care deeply about here at DVC: always putting pets and the people who love them first. ❤️

We may be a little biased, but we couldn’t be prouder to have Dr. Thomè representing Washington, advocating for pets and their owners, and helping shape the future of veterinary medicine — all while still coming home to take care of our patients here at DVC.

So yeah… our boss is kind of a big deal. But don’t worry, we’ll try not to let it go to her head. 😉😂🐾

🚧 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: WEEK 6! 🚧

We are officially six weeks into our BIG renovation at Desert Veterinary Clinic! 🛠️🐾 And because we’ve had quite a few people asking when we’ll be done, we wanted to give everyone a little reminder:

Our entire renovation is expected to take approximately ONE YEAR to complete. 😅

We know construction can be inconvenient, and we are so incredibly grateful for your patience as we continue caring for your pets while essentially rebuilding our clinic around ourselves! Because we are remaining fully operational throughout the process, construction is happening in phases so that we can continue to safely provide care to our patients along the way.

But we promise… the finished product will be worth the wait. 🤍

When all is said and done, our new and improved hospital will include:
🐾 6 exam rooms instead of our current 4
🩺 A dedicated technician appointment room
🤍 A private comfort room designed to provide a peaceful space for families saying goodbye to a beloved pet
🛋️ A larger, expanded lobby
🐶🐱 Separate dog and cat kennel areas to help reduce stress for our hospitalized patients
🦷 A second dental table so we can better accommodate our patients’ dental care needs
✨ And so many other improvements behind the scenes!

🚨 IMPORTANT PARKING REMINDER: Our concrete is currently torn up, so please DO NOT enter our parking lot or attempt to use either of our driveways. There is currently no way to drive through our property to reach the portable building behind the clinic.

Please continue to follow our posted construction instructions when arriving for your appointment so we can keep everyone safe and construction moving forward!

We know it’s a little chaotic right now, but we are SO excited about what we’re building for our patients, our clients, our team, and the future of Desert Veterinary Clinic. 🥹🤍

Thank you for sticking with us through the dust, noise, detours, and growing pains. Week 6 down… only about 46 more to go! 😂🔨🐾

🎬 Just getting ready for our Netflix debut…

But in all seriousness, we believe pet owners deserve to know who really owns their veterinary clinic.

Research has found that only about 14% of veterinary practice websites clearly disclose corporate ownership. That means many veterinary clinics that look and feel like independent, locally owned practices may actually be owned by large corporations or private equity firms—and their clients may have no idea.

We believe transparency matters.

As the owners of Desert Veterinary Clinic, we are incredibly proud to be a locally and privately owned small business. The people making decisions about how our clinic operates are the same people you see walking through our doors, working alongside our team, and caring for your pets every day.

We believe that local ownership allows us to make decisions based on what is best for our patients, our clients, our team, and our community—and we hope you can feel that difference in the care we provide.

Pet owners deserve to know who is behind their pet’s care so they can make informed decisions about where they feel most comfortable taking the animals they love.

At DVC, we’re proud to be locally owned. Proud to be independent. And very proud to care for the pets and people of our community. ❤️🐾

We hope you and your families have a fun, safe, and memorable Independence Day!

As you're celebrating, don't forget that the holiday can be stressful—and sometimes dangerous—for our furry family members. A few last-minute reminders:

❤️ Keep pets safely indoors during fireworks, as even the calmest pets can become frightened and try to escape.

💙 Make sure collars and ID tags are secure, and confirm your pet's microchip information is up to date.

❤️ Keep BBQ foods, corn cobs, bones, onions, grapes, chocolate, and alcohol out of reach.

💙 Never bring pets near fireworks or sparklers, as they can cause serious burns and injuries.

❤️ Create a quiet, comfortable space with the TV, music, or a fan on to help mask the sound of fireworks.

Most importantly, enjoy making memories with the people—and pets—you love.

We’ve heard the rumors... and we wanted to set the record straight. ❤️

Recently, several clients have asked if Desert Veterinary Clinic was purchased by a corporate veterinary company because of our remodel.
The answer is no.

Desert Veterinary Clinic has proudly been locally owned since Dr. Harding first opened our doors in 1973. Through the years, ownership has been passed from one generation of veterinarians to the next, and today we’re proud to continue that tradition as a locally owned practice under Dr. Thomè and Dr. Neuhaus.

Our remodel isn’t because we’re changing who we are—it’s because we’re investing in our future. We’re expanding our exam rooms, improving our workflow, and creating a more functional, comfortable space so we can continue providing the care you and your pets deserve for many years to come.

While our building may be getting a fresh new look, one thing will never change:
