Let’s talk about calming meds, and grooming.
This is a topic where some people have very strong opinions, and that’s okay!!
Calming medications are meant to take the edge off of nervous dogs, stressed dogs, reactive dogs, and aggressive dogs.
Is it mean to give this medication? Absolutely not!!!
These medications come prescribed by your vet, and are meant to make your dog calm, relaxed, and tired.
You may see them VERY tired at home. That is because they are in their comfortable space + calming meds = VERY relaxed.
But at the salon, they will perk back up just not as much (if the dose and timing are correct)
If your dog sleeps through grooming, isn’t that better than nervous p**ps while being groomed?! That’s a win in my book!
We work with oh so many dogs that come medicated for all different reasons.
Some are just so wiggly it’s hard to give them an even haircut.
Some are aggressive for touching feet/nails/face.
Some are reactive or have accidents for the blow dryer.
If your dog is stressed from the grooming process, you are HELPING them get through their appointment easier, which means faster!
Do you think your dog is high energy/anxiety?
Has your dog been turned away from previous groomers?
We are a team, and we work together to keep your dog as calm as possible while in our care, so let’s chat if you think medication could be the right choice to help your dog.
**picture of Vinnie, who sleeps like a baby through his grooming now that we have incorporated medication. He used to lunge off the table and bite the entire time because he was stressed, now he’s just a tired sweetie.
