Ready to grow a greener tank? 🌿 Here are 10 popular freshwater plants to help you start simple, then level up.

Anubias and Java Fern are low-light rhizome favorites: attach them to rock or wood and keep the rhizome above the substrate. Amazon Swords are rooted, heavy feeders that make excellent midground or background plants.

Cryptocoryne adds textured midground growth, while Vallisneria creates a tall background curtain. Java Moss and Bucephalandra attach beautifully to hardscape. Dwarf Sagittaria works in the foreground or midground, Rotala brings colorful background stems, and Hornwort can be floated or planted.

Plant needs vary by cultivar and aquarium conditions. Light, substrate, nutrients, and CO2 all affect growth. These are popular plant types; not a guarantee of current stock; so check availability before visiting.

Stop by Sierra Fish & Pets for live plants, substrate, lighting, fertilizers, and aquascaping help. We’re here for pleasing customers and pampering pets! 💧

Choosing freshwater fish is about more than picking the prettiest one. 🐟🌿

Our new fish-counter field guide features 10 popular freshwater favorites: Betta, Guppy, Neon Tetra, Angelfish, Corydoras Catfish, Bristlenose Pleco, Mollies, Platies, Cherry Barbs, and Discus.

This isn’t a definitive ranking: just a practical starting point for choosing fish that fit your aquarium and experience level.

Before bringing home any fish, check compatibility, adult size, water parameters, and tank size. Schooling fish need proper groups, Corydoras thrive with companions, Bettas need suitable tankmates and filtration, and Bristlenose Plecos need adequate space, driftwood, and fiber in their diet. Angelfish and Discus are beautiful but better suited to experienced aquarists.

Need help building a compatible community? Visit Sierra Fish & Pets for fish, supplies, and friendly advice. We’ll help you find the right fit for your tank! 💧

What’s in the bowl matters! 🐦 A healthy bird-food routine is about balance: not choosing just one type.

At Sierra Fish & Pets, we carry seed-based options like Volkman and Lafeber, formulated maintenance and vitamin-fortified diets from ZuPreem and Harrison’s, including ZuPreem FruitBlend, plus fresh variety and bird-safe extras.

A practical general starting point for many companion birds is about 70% maintenance/vitamin-fortified diet and 30% seed, with fresh fruits and vegetables added for variety. This is not veterinary advice: the right plan varies by species, age, health, activity, and individual needs. An avian veterinarian can help tailor it.

Offer fresh produce in small portions, plus occasional plain cooked pasta or plain cooked chicken only: no salt, seasonings, sauces, butter, onion, or garlic. Fresh foods and extras should never replace a complete diet. Provide fresh water every day.

Need help choosing a food? Stop by Sierra Fish & Pets: we’re happy to help you pamper your bird! 🧡

One Food Is Good. A Rotated Diet Is Better! 🐟

Start Here: Choose the right size and texture for your fish. Our aquarium food selection includes flakes, pellets, freeze-dried foods, and frozen varieties from brands like Aqueon, Tetra, Sera, Fluval Bug Bites, Omega One, Repashy, and Hikari. Availability varies by product and food type.

Then Level Up: Rotate foods to provide different nutrients, textures, and feeding behaviors: not just the same meal every day!

Surface feeders often enjoy floating flakes or pellets. Mid-water fish may prefer slow-sinking options. Bottom dwellers like Corydoras need food that reaches the substrate. Herbivores, carnivores, community fish, and picky eaters can all benefit from species-appropriate variety.

A simple routine: rotate two or three suitable foods throughout the week, feed small portions, and remove uneaten food before it breaks down and affects water quality. 🧹

Not sure what fits your fish? Bring us your stocking list: we’ll help you build an EASY feeding plan!

Algae taking over your saltwater tank? Start with snails, then level up only when your aquarium is mature, stable and large enough for the job! 🧽🌊

Turbo, Trochus, Astrea, Nerite, Cerith and Nassarius Snails are excellent starting points for reef tanks and fish-only systems: helping with film algae, hair algae, detritus, leftover food, glass, rockwork and sand beds.

Ready to level up? Emerald Crabs, Tuxedo Urchins and Long-Spine Urchins can tackle tougher algae, but monitor them closely. Urchins may move loose frags or rockwork, and Emerald Crabs can become opportunistic.

Big-tank grazers like Lawnmower Blennies, Bristletooth Tangs, Other Tangs and Rabbitfish/Foxfaces need mature aquariums, plenty of natural food, swimming space and proper tank size. They’re often best suited to larger reef or fish-only/FOWLR setups: and Rabbitfish should be kept with caution.

Remember: no clean-up crew replaces testing, water changes and good husbandry. Ask us which combination fits your tank! 🐠

Algae isn’t one problem: and there isn’t one perfect algae eater! 🐠 Match the cleanup crew to the algae, tank size, and available surfaces.

Plecos 🪵 Clown Plecos graze soft algae and biofilm from wood, rocks, and décor. Bristlenose Plecos work across glass, rocks, and décor, but both need a properly sized tank, driftwood, and supplemental food.

Otocinclus 🌿 Perfect for peaceful, mature nano tanks. They graze soft algae and biofilm from plant leaves, glass, and décor.

Nerite Snails 🐌 Excellent glass cleaners for hard green spot algae and film algae. They stay small and won’t reproduce in freshwater.

Mystery Snails 🐚 Clean glass and other smooth surfaces while helping with leftover food. They create more bioload than Nerites and need supplemental feeding.

Amano Shrimp 🦐 Great nano-tank helpers for soft algae, biofilm, and some hair or black beard algae on plants, rocks, and décor.

Siamese Algae Eaters (SAE) ⭐ One of the best choices for black beard algae. They graze plants, rocks, wood, and other surfaces in larger, active community tanks.

Florida Flagfish 🎏 Helpful for filamentous or hair algae: and sometimes black beard algae: on plants, rocks, and décor. Choose tankmates carefully.

Quick picks: Nano tank: Otocinclus, Nerites, Amano Shrimp. Black beard algae: SAE, Florida Flagfish, Amano Shrimp. Glass algae: Nerites, Mystery Snails, Otocinclus. Larger tanks: Clown or Bristlenose Plecos.

Remember: algae eaters still need a balanced diet and clean, stable water. Stop by Sierra Fish & Pets and we’ll help you choose the right match! 💚
