In a recent publication in the scientific journal Avian Biology, a discussion around the avian microbiome of migratory birds shed more light on how the microbiome is diversified. When it comes to nutrition, whole unprocessed foods that are not sterilized are critical to microbiota exposure. This includes fresh, raw produce and things like soaked and sprouted items like seeds, grains and legumes.
The strongest evidence suggests that building a resilient microbiome comes from regular exposure to diverse living microbes AND feeding them properly, not just taking random supplements or feeding a processed food with synthetic vitamins. Also, feeding whole food items that are rich in prebiotic fiber like green banana, whole grains, and YES, SEEDS all support a healthy diverse microbiome. Diversifying the diet so that your bird gets a little of everything is always going to be beneficial.
