🐾❓ ASK DOG TRAINING BY PJ FRIDAY ❓🐾

Q: “WHY DOES MY DOG KNOW IT ONE DAY… AND SEEM TO FORGET IT THE NEXT?”

This is one of those questions dog trainers hear all the time!

Your dog probably hasn’t forgotten. 🐶

Dogs don’t automatically understand that something they learned in one situation applies everywhere.

Your dog may sit beautifully in your quiet living room—but asking for that same sit:

🐾 At the park
🐾 When another dog walks by
🐾 When visitors arrive
🐾 In a training class
🐾 When they’re excited, worried or tired

…can be an entirely different challenge.

Think of learning like climbing a staircase. Sometimes we move up a step. Sometimes we need to come back down one before we’re ready to climb again.

💡 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If your dog struggles with something they normally know:

💜 Make the task easier.
💜 Reduce distractions or create more distance.
💜 Give your dog a moment to settle.
💜 Reward the behavior they can give you.
💜 Build the difficulty back gradually.

And remember—repeating a cue louder doesn’t make the answer easier. 😉

This is why we practice behaviors in different places, around different distractions and at different levels of difficulty.

We aren’t just teaching a behavior.

We’re helping our dogs learn when and how to use it.

💥 YOUR DOG ISN’T GIVING YOU A HARD TIME.
YOUR DOG MAY BE HAVING A HARD TIME.

When a dog suddenly stops listening, pulls harder, barks, jumps, shuts down or struggles with something they normally can do, it’s easy to think:

❌ “He knows better.”
❌ “She’s being stubborn.”
❌ “He’s testing me.”
❌ “She just doesn’t want to listen.”

💣 TRUTH BOMB:
Behavior isn’t personal.

Your dog may be overexcited, worried, frustrated, distracted, tired—or simply unable to handle what we’re asking in that moment.

Knowing a behavior and being able to perform it under every circumstance are two very different things.

Think about us humans. We know plenty of things that become harder when we’re stressed, overwhelmed, exhausted or distracted. Our dogs aren’t so different. 🐶💜

So when your dog struggles, instead of asking:

“Why are you giving me such a hard time?”

Try:

💜 “Are YOU having a hard time—and how can I help?”

That one change in perspective can completely change the way we train.

Make the situation easier.
Create some distance.
Lower the distraction.
Reward what your dog can do.
Then build from there.

🐾 WISDOM WEDNESDAY 🐾

💜 REGRESSION IS INFORMATION — NOT FAILURE.

Yesterday your dog nailed it.
Today? Not so much. 😂

It can be tempting to think your dog is going backward when a behavior that seemed solid suddenly falls apart.

But a difficult day can actually give us valuable information.

Your dog may be telling you:

🐾 “There’s too much happening around me.”
🐾 “I’m not ready for this level of difficulty yet.”
🐾 “I’m excited, worried or overwhelmed.”
🐾 “I need a little more practice before we take the next step.”

Training isn’t a race to see how quickly we can move forward.

Sometimes good training means recognizing when our dog needs us to go back one step so they can confidently move forward again.

Instead of seeing a setback as failure, see it as feedback.

💡 Your dog’s struggle is information. Listen to it. Adjust. Help them succeed.

✨ WHEN YOUR DOG “FORGETS” — MAKE IT EASIER, NOT LOUDER. ✨

Have you ever asked your dog to do something they KNOW… and suddenly they look at you like they’ve never heard that word before? 😂

Before repeating the cue louder or deciding your dog is being stubborn, ask yourself:

🐾 Did the environment change?
More people, dogs, noises or distractions can make a familiar behavior much harder.

🐾 Did I increase the difficulty too quickly?
Distance, duration and distractions all add to the challenge.

🐾 Is my dog too excited, worried or tired to learn well right now?

💡 TRAINING TIP:
When your dog struggles with something they normally know, lower the difficulty until they can succeed again.

Move farther away from the distraction.
Ask for less.
Reward the small success.
Then gradually build back up.

Training isn’t about proving your dog knows something. It’s about helping your dog successfully use what they’ve learned in lots of different situations. 💜
