SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT:
Cadence Lewis

Cadence is a senior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she is part of the university’s accelerated B.A./M.A. program. She majors in History, with minors in Public History and Asian Studies.

Project Summary:
Over the summer, Cadence worked with BHS as a history intern–researching the organization's earliest years, the history of animal cemeteries in the region, and BHS Memorial Park within those contexts. Much of her research focused on learning more about the pets who have been laid to rest in the cemetery over the past century–uncovering stories and memories of animals who were deeply loved and long-remembered. She's honored to share some of those unique and poignant stories at Pet Memorial Sunday.

Baltimore Humane Society Memorial Park is the final resting place for so many beloved pets, including "Cora" & "Boy" two of the first guide dogs in the US. Their caretaker was Arthur Sewell, first custodian of the Baltimore Flag House and locally famous not only for his work and residence at the Flag House but also for being a person who is blind but an excellent bowler!

Learn all about some of our fascinating history with our history intern, Cadence, at Pet Memorial Sunday on Sunday, September 13!

Cadence is joining us as a guest speaker and she will tell us some of the many interesting stories about the people and pets of BHS Memorial Park.

SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: Nathan Nardi

Nathan Nardi is Director of Cemetery Operations for the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Director of New Cathedral Cemetery, Maryland's largest Catholic cemetery. In this role, he oversees cemetery operations, master planning, preservation, and the long-term stewardship of more than 50 Catholic cemeteries, while helping families navigate one of life's most meaningful moments with dignity, compassion, and respect.

Nathan is the author of "Missing Nemo", a heartfelt children's book inspired by the love we share with our pets and the lasting memories they leave behind. Through storytelling, he helps children and families explore themes of love, loss, hope, and remembrance in a gentle and meaningful way.

At Pet Memorial Sunday, Nathan will share the inspiration behind "Missing Nemo", discuss the true story that led to its creation, and reflect on the special bond between people and their beloved animal companions. His presentation celebrates the healing power of remembrance and the enduring place our pets hold in our hearts.

Nathan will have copies of "Missing Nemo" at our reception table.

Kelly Evans, founder "Briar Fosters"

Kelly is the founder of Briar Fosters (Briar_Fosters on Instagram). Kelly is a tireless and dedicated "fospice" mom. She fosters dogs who are terminally ill and gives them a safe, comfortable home in their last days.

Kelly's home is filled with love, treats, hikes and all the attention and medical care her fosters need. Kelly will share her experience, stories and wisdom with us.

Everyone who has ever lost a pet or who is facing a loss is invited to attend this unique event commemorating National Pet Memorial Day. Please join us as we remember and celebrate all the pets who have touched our lives.

Amy earned her MSW from the University of Maryland School of Social Work in 1994 and spent the next fifteen years working with children and families at Jewish Community Services in Baltimore. During that time, the loss of a beloved pet deepened her understanding of the human–animal bond and set her on a new path.
She founded Molly's Hope, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, initially focused on raising funds and awarding grants to help families access emergency, life-saving veterinary care. Over time, however, she found herself spending as much time counseling pet owners in crisis—exploring the profound connections they shared with their animals and the emotional toll of medical emergencies—as she did fundraising. Looking back, she can see she had already discovered veterinary social work.
In March 2024, Amy made it official, becoming the second practicing veterinary social worker in the state of Maryland when she joined Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center (CVRC). There, she supports both clients and staff through the full emotional spectrum of veterinary medicine — from navigating difficult diagnoses and end-of-life decisions to processing anticipatory grief and the profound loss that follows the death of a beloved animal. She also provides compassionate support to the veterinary team itself, helping clinicians and staff cope with the emotional demands of their work, including compassion fatigue, moral distress, and the weight of bearing witness to both the joy and heartbreak that define life in veterinary medicine.
