“Green flags in a riding instructor.” Not every good rider is a good instructor.

There are alot of people out there with zero horse knowledge trying to find a good place to start riding for either themselves or a child. Whether you go with us or not, here is a good guideline on finding a solid lesson barn.

If you’re choosing a lesson program, here are green flags to look for:

🟢 They teach more than just riding. Kids learn to halter, groom, tack up, and care for the horse, not just sit in the saddle.

🟢 They let kids struggle a little before stepping in. Confidence is built through problem-solving, not constant rescuing.

🟢 Safety is consistent, not reactive. Helmets are on. Rules are clear. Horses are appropriately matched. Progress is not rushed.

🟢 They explain the “why,” not just bark commands. Kids understand what they’re doing and why it matters.

🟢 They correct calmly. No shaming. No humiliation.

🟢 They don’t chase ribbons at the expense of foundation.

🟢 Horses look healthy, relaxed, and well-managed. You can tell a lot about a program by how the horses look.

🟢 They have many students who have been there for long periods of time. High turnover is a red flag. Some is expected.

🟢 They’re still learning themselves. Clinics. Mentors. Continuing education.

A great instructor isn’t trying to create little professionals overnight.

They’re building capable humans who happen to ride.

The right program should grow your child’s confidence, responsibility, and work ethic, not just their posting trot.

That’s the difference.

“Red flags in a riding lesson program.”

Not every barn that offers lessons should.

If you’re choosing a program for your child, pay attention.

🚩 Kids only ride. They never learn to halter, groom, tack up, or clean. If they show up, ride, and leave, they’re learning a hobby, not horsemanship.

🚩 The instructor yells more than they teach. Correction is loud, reactive, or embarrassing instead of clear and constructive.

🚩 Safety isn't priority. Ask how often kids fall off? The answer should be close to never.

🚩 Horses look sour, thin, overly tired, or constantly pinned-eared during lessons.

🚩 Kids are rushed into advanced skills before mastering basics.

🚩 There’s constant drama. Chaos is normalized.

🚩 Progress looks flashy but not solid. Big jumps, fast patterns, but shaky fundamentals.

A good lesson program should feel structured. Calm. Intentional.

You should see kids growing in confidence and responsibility, not just chasing speed or ribbons.

And you should see horses that are respected, not used up.

If something feels off, it probably is. Trust that instinct. Try a few barns and see the differences. A good barn won't be threatened by that.

Here's your incredibly important blanketing season reminder courtesy of the horse doctors at Miamitown Equine Veterinary Services:

"When securing blankets, make sure that the snaps/clips are facing inward, toward the horse! If they are facing out, they can easily become stuck on something, like the hay net in the picture."

Our homeschool class had such a fun time practicing grooming, 'painting' horses, and racing through an obstacle which taught students how to care for their horse AND lead them through tasks! Great job everyone!

The artwork was all too good to pick a winner!

Videos of the 3 fastest times in the obstacle course in the comments.

Obstacle course Winner was Jackson!
