This weeks fire safety tip is about water heaters. Only use them when it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Stay close by when they are plunged in. NEVER remove them from the water when plugged in. ALWAYS unplug as soon as the water is warm. After use place in a cold pail of water until they are cool. Finally, be sure that the barn electrical system is capable of handling the large amount of current that they require. Whenever possible bring warm water from the house.

A quick word on alarms in barns. Alarms don't work in barns right? There is no easy answer to this. In some barns smoke alarms will work in others they won't. I personally wouldn't rule them totally out. Pictured is a v-cone heat alarm. It sounds at 120 -135 degrees. Please keep alarms in mind as part of your stable fire safety. For very little money they might help you sleep at night, or, even better wake you UP at night.
