They dwell underneath your bed.
They watch you from darkened halls.
Their eyes glow in the night.
They hear things you cannot hear.

They creep.
They pounce.
They knock mysterious objects from shelves…
and sometimes, they scream for absolutely no reason at all.

They lurk in shadows.
They appear silently behind you.

🎉 HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH FINALE: 16 RESCUES, 1 SHARED LEGACY 🎉

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, Nine Lives welcomed 16 new cat intakes named in honor of historic Latin American heroes—defenders of freedom, community, and life. 🐾

While we could only feature a few of their remarkable histories on our main feed, every single one of these 16 cats carries a legacy of protection and resilience. From quiet cuddlers to bold adventurers, each intake represents a new beginning and a reminder of the power of community care.

Thanks to your incredible support, 11 of our Heritage Series cats have already found forever homes! Now, we need your help to find loving families for the remaining 5 hero cats still waiting at the shelter.

They traveled across the Pacific to get here — and now our Kauaʻi kittens are ready for the final leg of their journey: HOME.

These little island kitties are ridiculously friendly, affectionate, playful, and full of the spirit of Aloha. They’ve been through quite an adventure, but you’d never know it from the purrs, cuddles, and love they’re handing out to everyone they meet.

And right now, we need your help making space.

Every adoption opens a spot at Nine Lives for another cat or kitten who needs us. The more cats we send home, the more we can say YES to — whether they’re coming from an overcrowded shelter, a rescue partner, or a community in crisis.

When emergency strikes, collaboration saves lives.

Following severe storm damage, power outages, and extreme overcrowding on Kauaʻi, Nine Lives and Berkeley Humane joined forces with Kauai Humane Society to deliver critical relief.

Across two emergency transport flights on October 5 and October 12, dozens of cats and kittens flew from Līhuʻe to SFO. By welcoming these animals into our Bay Area foster networks and clinic care, we directly relieved pressure on Kauaʻi shelter staff during a crucial time of island recovery.

✈️🌺 MISSION COMPLETE: THE ALOHA KITTY PROJECT HAS LANDED! 🌺✈️

Flight #2 is officially in the books! Over the past two weeks, Nine Lives and Berkeley Humane joined forces with Kauai Humane Society to execute a multi-flight disaster relief effort following severe storm damage and shelter overcrowding on Kauaʻi.

Across both transport flights, our organizations brought dozens of vulnerable cats and kittens from Līhuʻe to the Bay Area—giving them immediate medical care and a fresh start while relieving critical pressure on island shelter staff.

Now, the work shifts from transport to placement!

More than 20 cats and kittens have traveled across the Pacific — and today, they’re safe at Nine Lives and getting ready for their next chapter.

Following devastating hurricane-force winds, widespread damage and power outages on Kauaʻi, the island’s only open-admission shelter has been under tremendous pressure, with animals continuing to arrive and space desperately needed.

Berkeley Humane stepped up.

Working with partners in Hawaiʻi and the Bay Area, Berkeley Humane coordinated an incredible effort to create a lifeline off the island — transporting cats and kittens from Kauaʻi to safety here in Northern California. When they asked Nine Lives to be part of that effort, we were proud to say yes.

Last week, our team met more than 20 of these cats and kittens at SFO and brought them back to our Redwood City campus. Since arriving, they’ve received veterinary exams, vaccines, medications as needed, nutritious food, safe housing, plenty of love — and everything our team can provide to prepare them for adoption.

This is what partnership looks like.

No single shelter or rescue can solve an animal welfare crisis alone. By sharing resources, expertise and capacity, organizations can accomplish so much more together. Berkeley Humane helped create a pathway off an overwhelmed island. Nine Lives had the medical and shelter capacity to welcome these cats into our care. And our community provides the support that allows us to say YES when partners call.

And we’re not finished.

Nine Lives is preparing to welcome even more cats and kittens from Kauaʻi in the coming weeks — and we need your help.

Every new arrival means veterinary care, vaccines, medications, food, housing and daily care until that cat finds a loving home. Your donation helps give Nine Lives the resources and capacity to keep showing up for our rescue partners and for cats in crisis.

✈️🌺 22 ISLAND RESCUES SAFE AT NINE LIVES! 🌺✈️

When recent severe weather and power outages pushed Kauaʻi Humane Society past capacity, animal welfare groups stepped up to help. Geography is the biggest challenge for an island shelter—when space runs out, the only way forward is across the Pacific.

This week, the first Aloha Kitty Project transport flight landed at SFO! Our team at Nine Lives Foundation welcomed 22 cats and kittens into our care, while our partners at Berkeley Humane stepped up for the rest.

Moving these 22 animals into Nine Lives directly relieves critical pressure on Kauaʻi shelter staff so they can keep saving lives on the island.

With a second transport flight landing on October 12, we need our local Bay Area community more than ever!
