Movement Monday
Extended Trot

In the extended trot, the horse should clearly increase the length of stride and the amount of suspension; and its hind leg should show clear thrust. There should also be a corresponding extension in the horse’s frame. This means that the neck should become longer with the poll still remaining the highest point. The extended trot is a maximum effort movement for the horse. During the extended trot the horse should remain supple and balanced with its nose slightly in front of the vertical. If the horse loses either of these things, the rider should make the extended trot smaller until the horse has the strength and balance to go larger.
To create the extended trot, the rider first compresses the horse through a series of half halts that put the horse more on the seat and builds impulsion and power in the trot. When the horse becomes like a compressed spring under the rider’s seat, they can then close the lower leg, open the thigh, and allow with the seat. The rider must maintain an elastic connection throughout the movement. The transition in and out of the extended trot should be smooth, so that the horse is not knocked out of balance. It is also important to keep in mind that the horse should make a transition to extend trot, and then be allowed to maintain the extended trot for the duration of the line, rather than chasing the horse throughout the movement to the very end.
