Geluk's sire.. a legend. 🧡
Jazz (Cocktail × Ulster): The Stallion Who Changed Dressage Breeding 🐴✨
Some horses enjoy successful careers. Others leave a legacy that changes an entire breeding industry. Jazz (Cocktail × Ulster) belongs firmly in the second category. 🎶🐎
Born on 21 May 1991 in the Netherlands, the chestnut KWPN stallion was bred by Huub van Helvoirt. His pedigree combined Cocktail with the mare Charmante, a daughter of Ulster, giving us the familiar breeding shorthand Cocktail × Ulster. Interestingly, the young stallion was originally named Jacob before becoming the horse the dressage world would know as Jazz.
From Promising Youngster to Grand Prix Star 🌟
Jazz wasn't simply a breeding stallion with an impressive pedigree—he proved himself in sport too.
After gaining approval as a stallion, Jazz was partnered with Dutch Olympian Tineke Bartels, who developed him all the way to Grand Prix dressage. The pair competed at the Dutch Championships and later represented the Netherlands at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez de la Frontera, where the Dutch team finished fifth. Jazz was subsequently ridden at Grand Prix level by Kirsten Beckers.
His character was reportedly as memorable as his movement. Jazz was described as intelligent, curious and highly aware of everything happening around him—qualities that made him an unmistakable personality. ❤️
A Dressage Breeding Legend 🧬🏆
It is through breeding, however, that Jazz achieved extraordinary influence.
Jazz became a genuine foundation sire of modern dressage breeding, producing successful Grand Prix horses and influential breeding stallions. His descendants include names such as Johnson, Tango, Wynton, Westpoint and Blue Hors Don Olymbrio.
His influence also continued through later generations. One particularly striking example is Johnson (Jazz × Flemmingh), himself an enormously successful dressage sire. In the 2023 WBFSH Dressage Sire Ranking, Johnson finished first while Jazz—despite belonging to an earlier generation—was still ranked an extraordinary third. Blue Hors Zack, whose damsire was Jazz, occupied second place. 🥇🥈🥉
That is quite a family footprint!
The Lasting Legacy of Jazz 👑
Jazz's importance goes beyond competition results or individual offspring. He helped shape the characteristics associated with the modern Dutch dressage horse: expression, athleticism, presence and powerful movement. 🐴💫
In 2006, Jazz received the prestigious KWPN preferent predicate in recognition of his sporting achievements and exceptionally successful offspring.
What makes his story particularly special is the combination of performance and heredity. Jazz competed at the highest level himself, but then passed enough quality to subsequent generations for his name to remain relevant decades after his birth.
Today, spotting Jazz somewhere in a dressage pedigree still means encountering a piece of modern breeding history. From Cocktail × Ulster came far more than one exceptional chestnut stallion—it produced a bloodline whose rhythm continues through international dressage. 🎶🐎🌍
Jazz wasn't merely named after music—he created a rhythm in dressage breeding that generations of horses are still following. ✨
