Have you heard of DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy)?
DCM is a serious heart condition that can affect several dog breeds, including Dobermans, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds, Boxers, and others. In some breeds, there is a genetic component, and testing can help determine whether a dog carries genetic markers associated with the disease.
Today, Henry, our sweet 5-year-old Doberman, came in for his first Holter monitor placement. Henry carries genetic markers associated with DCM, and his family is doing everything they can to stay proactive about his heart health. He’ll wear the monitor for 48 hours, allowing a cardiologist to evaluate his heart rhythm and look for any abnormalities.
Early detection and routine monitoring can make a significant difference in managing heart disease and maintaining quality of life.
If you have a breed that may be predisposed to DCM, give us a call! We’d be happy to discuss screening options, monitoring recommendations, and available treatments to help keep your pet’s heart as healthy as possible. ❤️🐾
