We couldn’t be prouder to see Dr. Ronald Genovese, recognized by The Foundation for the Horse.

His influence can still be felt every day at Cleveland Equine Clinic, and we are honored to celebrate this well-deserved recognition.

Congratulations, Dr. Genovese! Thank you for the lasting impact you’ve made on our profession and our clinic.

Mentors don’t just master their craft — they make sure others can master it, too.

This week we honor 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐞, whose career has been defined by innovation, education, and a deep commitment to advancing equine sports medicine.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Genovese built a career spanning more than five decades, including his work with Randall Veterinary Hospital and as cofounder of Cleveland Equine Clinic LLC. Widely recognized as a pioneer in equine limb ultrasonography, his advancements helped transform how veterinarians diagnose and treat lameness — influencing care for horses around the world. Many can attest to his dedication and impact, which led to him joining The Foundation for the Horse's My Mentor Honor Wall in 2019.

But perhaps his greatest impact is found in those who continue to follow his guidance.

“His love of equine veterinary medicine has always been clear and unquestionable to both clients and peers alike. Dr. Genovese would always take time to explain what and why he was doing something during a case to whomever wanted to listen, whether a high school student shadowing or a fellow veterinarian working on a case. He simply lives and works for the teachable moments to whomever is interested. 🌫️ Air Quality & Your Horse: Should You Ride?

We've been getting a lot of calls today asking the same question: "Is it safe to ride with the smoke from the Canadian wildfires?"

The short answer: It depends on your local Air Quality Index (AQI).

Here are some general guidelines:

🐴 AQI 0–100 (Good to Moderate): Most healthy horses can continue normal work.

🐴 AQI 101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups): Consider reducing exercise to light work, especially for horses with asthma, recurrent airway disease, or other respiratory conditions.

🐴 AQI 151+: We recommend postponing strenuous exercise as exercise is not recommended at these levels. Ride only at at walk or skip riding all together.

💧 During smoky conditions:
• Provide plenty of fresh water.
• Minimize dust by wetting hay or footing if needed.
• Watch for coughing, nasal discharge, increased respiratory effort, or decreased performance.
• If your horse has a history of respiratory disease, be extra cautious.

Smoke conditions can change quickly throughout the day, so check your local AQI before heading to the barn. When in doubt, an easy grooming session or some extra turnout is often a better choice than a hard workout.

We are hiring! CEC is currently accepting applications for a Veterinary Technician/Assistant! This is a full-time position. We are looking for a very special person with the following characteristics:
•Minimum age of 18
•5+ years of horse-handling experience (time as a teenager counts)
•Professional and effective communication skills
•Able to function independently and handle tasks without supervision
•Detail-oriented and organized
•Ability to work with sick/injured horses, potentially hazardous materials, and cleaning supplies
•Maintain professional composure in challenging situations
•Must have pleasant personality & positive attitude
•Ability to multitask and focus on the tasks at hand
•Must be able to work as part of a team
•Proficiency in Technology, especially tablets

Duties include:
•Provide technical support for daily appointments (in clinic and ambulatory)
•Assist veterinarian with examinations, treatments, surgeries, handling, and restraint
•Cleaning of medical supplies, exam room, stalls, etc.
•Maintain supplies and equipment for ambulatory vehicles
•Assist with inventory control
•Complete/fill out medical records and invoices
•Computer data entry of patient records
•Assist with diagnostic imaging, ultrasound, shockwave, endoscopy, etc.
•Occasional office/reception duties
•Represent the Clinic at horse-related events
Benefits: Pay is dependent on experience and education, and a license is not required. Full-time employees are eligible for health benefits and a 401k matching plan.

☀️🐴 Heat Advisory 🐴☀️
With temperatures soaring, it’s important to rethink our riding plans and put our horses health first. If you do ride, try to plan for the early morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. Keep rides shorter, take frequent breaks, and pay close attention to your horse for signs of overheating, such as excessive sweating, heavy breathing, or fatigue.

Make sure your horse has:
💧Fresh, clean water available at all times
🌳Plenty of shade or a well ventilated shelter
🧂Electrolytes if recommended for their workload
🚿A cool rinse focusing on the neck, chest, and legs and continue cooling until their breathing and temperature return to normal.

Some days the best ride is no ride at all. A little extra care during the heat advisory can help keep our equine partners healthy, happy, and ready for the next adventure when the weather cools down.
