Sound on for your misophonia moment of the day confirming that Mongo loves his Platinum Performance. I'm not the biggest "supplement" pusher but this is a company I believe because they have actually, literally, done the research. As in, scientific studies, not the Dr Google research most of us are guilty of! My personal favorite is the Repro Care formula, though of course Mongo has no need for that since he cannot be reproduced. He just gets his wellness foundation and Skin and Allergy during fly season since he's a delicate flower of a ranch horse!

Those big boxes from last week held my newest tool to help your horses feel and perform their best!! It's useful for dogs too! Very interesting modality that is coming into play with more potential all the time.

Lets talk insect bite hypersensitivity!

My 3-year-old Quarter Horse, Mongo, is such a team player, he agreed to model this condition, for teaching purposes...
Many horses have some degree of allergy to insect bites. This can range from mild itching to severe "claw your skin off" reactions. Mongo is what I consider a moderate case. He's not rubbing out all his hair...yet...but he has significant hives and is uncomfortable.

So how do we treat this? There's no one right answer. Pharmaceutically, steroids are the most effective, but come with side effects that must be considered. Antihistamines and nutraceuticals are also an option for some cases. For severe or persistent cases, allergy testing and immunotherapy can help. Copious quantities of fly spray and physical barriers like fly boots and sheets are great ways to limit exposure as well.

For Mongo, fly boots, aggressive fly spraying, and Platinum Performance Skin and Allergy formula (He's also on a wellness foundation formula from Platinum.) will be the primary treatment, with a little bit of steroid therapy in the beginning to help shut down the inflammation that's already present. Also, a break from wearing a saddle until the hives on his girth area are gone!

Buckle up, changes are coming!

I'm planning on taking a small step back from the breeding end of things. Really, it's a great time for that since breeding season is over. 😁 Right now I'm not sure what next year is going to look like for me. I'm looking at going in a slightly different direction and breeding fewer mares. I want less volume, more depth. Over the past several years I have been learning and moving in a slightly different direction with my approach to medicine. I like to consider a "whole horse" approach. Even though breeding has been my main focus, there are so many more factors involved...nutrition, overall health and wellness, special conditions.

As I work on my plan for 2027 I'm going to be focused mainly on providing chiropractic, acupuncture, and equine dentistry services. I would also like to offer nutritional and overall breeding program planning consultation to my clients. This is actually the best time of year to start looking ahead for 2027 breeding. Make a plan for those challenging mares. Start addressing medical conditions and overall wellness. Especially with the drought affecting many areas, feeding your mares over the fall and winter will present challenges that will have direct effects on your success next year. I'm always happy to answer questions, but I'd also like to offer full blown, lets-get-out-pen-paper-spreadsheets-and-past-breeding-history-type in depth consults. What do y'all think?

Still working on the travel schedule, and taking some time to decompress and make bad choices with my emotional support Mongo!

I'm headed to Marble Falls for TEVA in a couple days, then I'll be putting together a Wyoming trip after August 3rd. Probably mostly in SD & WY for August, with a personal side quest or two thrown in there! I'm planning to make a longer trip to Texas sometime in September, and Oklahoma will likely be part of that too. Unfortunately that's as specific as I can be at this time! Let me know what you need and I'll do my best!

I'm currently mostly offering chiropractic, acupuncture, and equine dentistry. I do have x-ray and ultrasound equipment as well and I can offer some general wellness and lameness services. If you have any questions, reach out and I'll do my best to answer. Also if you know of any fun things to do with an over-trained, under-ambitious 3-yr going on 20-yr off-brand sorrel gelding we're open to invitations! πŸ˜„

Breeding season 2026 is a wrap, folks! (No, really, it's time, just start early next year.) There are a few more preg checks & odds and ends to finish out, but we are officially in road trip season. Everyone traveling with horses should carry a med kit. It's alright if yours doesn't like like mine, but you absolutely need one!

I'll be in and out a lot in the next few weeks. Oklahoma and Texas are among my destinations, but I'll still be in South Dakota a fair bit until the middle of August. Let me know what you need and I'll call you back... sooner or later.
