⚠️🐾 WARNING: BLUE-GREEN ALGAE CAN BE DEADLY TO PETS! 🐾⚠️
With warmer weather, it’s important to be aware of harmful blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in lakes, ponds, rivers, and other bodies of water.
🚨 Blue-green algae can produce toxins that are extremely dangerous and potentially deadly to dogs and other animals. Pets can become sick from drinking contaminated water, swimming in it, eating algae, or licking contaminated water or algae from their fur.
💧 PLEASE NOTE: Regular drinking water from your home tap is completely safe for your animals. There is no need to worry about giving your pets tap water. The concern is with untreated or contaminated bodies of water where harmful algae may be present.
❌ Keep your pets away from water that:
• Looks green, blue, brown, or discolored
• Has foam, scum, mats, or a paint-like appearance
• Smells unusually bad
• Has dead fish or other animals nearby
🐶 If your pet gets into questionable water:
➡️ Get them out immediately.
➡️ Rinse them thoroughly with clean tap water.
➡️ Do not allow them to lick their fur.
➡️ Contact your veterinarian immediately if they show any signs of illness.
⚠️ Signs of possible poisoning include vomiting, excessive drooling, weakness, stumbling, difficulty breathing, tremors, seizures, and loss of energy.
When in doubt, stay out! There are plenty of safe ways to keep your four-legged family members cool. 💙🐾
Clean tap water/drinking water = SAFE! 💧🐶🐱
