🐾 ☎️ WHY DOES THE VET ER ASK ME TO CALL POISON CONTROL?
If your pet has eaten or been exposed to something potentially toxic, your veterinarian may ask you to contact Pet Poison Control — and there’s a very important reason why!
Poison Control gives our veterinary team access to specialized toxicology information based specifically on:
🐶 Your pet’s weight
☠️ The exact substance or medication involved
🥄 How much may have been ingested
⏰ When the exposure happened
🩺 Your pet’s current symptoms
After speaking with you, Poison Control provides a case number and specific treatment recommendations. Your veterinarian can then communicate directly with their toxicology specialists and use that information to help determine the safest treatment plan for your pet.
💡 It doesn’t mean your ER veterinarian doesn’t know what to do.
Think of Poison Control as another specialist joining your pet’s medical team. Toxicology is incredibly complex, and their extensive databases and expertise can provide valuable information for uncommon toxins, medications, household products, plants, foods, chemicals, and more.
⚠️ Poison Control is an independent service and typically charges its own consultation fee, separate from your veterinary hospital.
At PetEmerg Emergency Animal Hospital, our goal is to get your pet the most accurate information and appropriate treatment as quickly as possible.
