HOSPICE FAMILY NEEDED!

San Diego Humane Society reached out for help with placement of 12 year old Spirit. She was surrendered to them when her owner passed away and staff noted that her hind end seemed weak, making it tough for her to have the dignity to scoot away from her urine and f***s.

Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst, we said we could do our best for her. Deni had the privilege of transporting her to FFF where we found her to be more mobile on our surfaces, thankfully!

Spirit has been living in our FFF lobby the last few days since she got here, just as sweet as can be with both dogs and people. Today we ran labwork on her and it was SHOCKING!

Poor Spirit really does have so much spirit and doesn't even act like she is sick! She barks for food, can get up on her own, and is bright-eyed. Her values reflect end stage kidney failure without the presence of infection, so we started her on a bunch of great medication and supportive care.

We need a very special family to step up for Spirit now please! Stop in any day between 10am-3pm, and feel free to bring your pets for introductions.

Demetri and his 8 siblings ended up at the San Diego Humane Society after their owner passed away. The shelter reached out to us on their behalf, and we welcomed them all as Frosted Faces on April 20th. Demetri is 6 years old and weighs 9 lbs. He has been living in a foster home since the day after he arrived at FFF.

Here's an update from Demetri's foster mom:
"Demitri is a lovable couch potato who absolutely loves rides in a stroller. He now gets excited when I put his harness and leash on him to take him out on a stroller walk. His front legs are not fully developed, but it doesn’t stop him from climbing three steps to his favorite spot on the couch, reaching his food and water, and seeking me out for snuggles and scratches. He does need help getting off the couch though.

After a week of being an only dog in my home, Demitri and I welcomed Jabarkus into my home. They were so happy to see one another again (they are from the same home of 9 dogs originally). These pals groom one another, snuggle, share easily and seem comforted by one another. Demitri will steal his treats if left unattended and follows Jabarkus from spot to spot to snuggle even when Jabarkus is wanting space. Jabarkus takes it in stride and is gentle with Demitri.

Having Jabarkus around seems to have improved Demitri’s appetite. He was a picky eater who initially preferred to have me hold his bowl or hand feed him to get him to eat. He has been eating independently when he sees Jabarkus eating and often goes to his bowl to eat even though he has the same food in his own bowl. Neither is reactive over food and share easily going from bowl to bowl.

Jabarkus does well when left for short periods home alone with Demitri (2 hours is the max I've left them so far.) Jabarkus uses p*e pads perfectly. He does tend to get up to p*e and drink at night but easily falls back to sleep. There have been nights when he sleeps all night, so he may still be settling in to a routine. Both Demitri and Jabarkus sleep later in the morning when they sleep in bed with me."

Stay tuned for the next update from his foster home!

Winky entered Corona Shelter as a stray, and when he wasn't claimed, we welcomed him as a Frosted Face on April 11th. He is estimated to be 12 years old and weighs 10 lbs.

Winky went on a Frosted Fling so we could learn more about him while he enjoyed spending time in the comfort of a loving home. His foster mom shares:

"Winky has gotten really comfortable over the past 3 weeks with our routine, and I think he just needs a little time to settle in. Winky is the opposite of a Velcro dog in that he's pretty independent and won't ask you for cuddles, but he's a quiet little cutie who doesn't seem to mind when I pick him up or give him kisses.

Here's how a day with Winky goes at my house:
When we all get up to start our day, I have to physically touch Winky to wake him up. If he's comfy in bed, he's completely knocked out. If only we could all sleep so well! He doesn't hear me say his name, so I have to poke him a bit. I carry him to the backyard so he can do his business, after which he wanders around for some fresh air. Winky is vision impaired, but he's managed to map out the yard. He seems to enjoy getting some sun and fresh air.

Winky is thin, but don't let that fool you - he has a great appetite! I put his meals in a slow feeder bowl, so he doesn't eat too fast, and I feed him separately so the other dogs don't try to eat his food. After breakfast I let him hang out in the yard for a while longer so that he can digest and do his post-meal business. Then, I bring him back into the house so he can drink some water and settle into bed. If I'm home, I let him sleep for a few hours, and then I take him outside. At dinnertime, we do the same thing.

Winky gets along with my two little senior dogs just fine. They are quiet and keep to themselves, and I think Winky would best in a quiet home without a lot of activity. He'd love to find a family with lots of squishy beds to sink into!"

On April 22nd, Chris fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Abuela.

She shared,
"It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Abuela passed in her sleep last week. She had not been ill, but these past 6 months had shown her slowing down, sleeping more, and shorter hikes.

Abuela brought a sweet, peaceful love into our home from the beginning. Her big smile, humble personality, and eagerness for affection made her such a joy. She was always up and ready for our walks every, and I was happy to oblige. Swimming in the lakes and rivers was a newfound joy, once we moved from California to Georgia, and grass rolling became a sport in many open meadows.

I am so grateful for the two and a half years she spent with us. It wasn't long enough, but the memories Abuela left with us will last forever. RIP my sweet girlie."

Fan: Donor in memory of Zeus the Mastiff
Facts: Abuela was 12 years old, and was rescued from Sacramento Shelter on December 8th, 2023.

Vito arrived in Baldwin Park as a stray, and sadly, no one came forward to claim him. We welcomed this charming boy on February 10th. Estimated to be 14 years old and weighing just 8.5 pounds, Vito is considered one of our most “adoptable” Frosted Felines.

What does this mean? Vito is in good health, very social, and gets along well with other pets. Best of all, he has no history of behavioral concerns - he is a gem! Gentle and sweet, Vito fits right in.

After a recent dental, Vito is feeling great and is ready to find a loving forever home. He may be a senior, but he still has so much love to give—he’s just waiting for someone to share it with. Might that be you?

On April 13, Mac fulfilled his promise to Frosted Face Heavy.

He shared,
"When we met years ago, I’d like to think we both knew this was love. Every single day forward we grew to understand each other more. Giggling past our bedtime, exploring the outdoors, submitting to your begging puppy eyes, or driving with your ears flopping in the wind, we stayed busy.

One of the greatest moments of my life was watching you on that camping trip at Palomar last year. You were the party, absolutely alive and by far more pictures of you than anyone else.

Your size was big but your personality was bigger. Diva when it was a minute past dinner, huff and puff when you were bored, or tricking grammy into giving you a double portion of food…

In all seriousness, you were a blessing to everyone you came across. You were given the name Heaven for a reason. Kind, caring, compassionate and a silly gentle giant.
We love you, Heavy. Forever my best friend. "

Fan: Heather B.
Facts: Heaven was 11 years old, and was rescued from West Valley Shelter LA on November 29th, 2023.

Long time FFF volunteer, Jen Garcia, let us know she hosted 9 year old Luna the boxer for a weekend foster excursion for Department of Animal Services San Diego. She emailed us lots of nice photos, shared what a great time she had with her, and asked if we would exit her to FFF now that she was back at the shelter.

Ironically, the shelter had emailed us the day before to inform us she was not considered a candidate for adoption and would likely face euthanasia without a rescue placement due to ongoing lameness in one of her back legs despite NSAIDs.

I am not sharing this to criticize the shelter; we empathize deeply with the challenges they face. Everyone in animal welfare is operating with limited resources and facing overwhelming numbers of abandoned pets. As a result, difficult decisions must be made every day regarding the level of care that can be provided and how long animals can remain in the shelter before behavioral or medical decline becomes a concern over other more adoptable pets.

What is really cool is how Jen stepped up! We discussed how this dog she loved needed an exit in one day, and we needed her to be the literal lifesaver by fostering her because we did not have an open kennel. Jen instantly agreed and we rescued her the next day! We vetted Luna and started her on a pain med regimen so she can go back to chasing lizards.

Even cooler, Luna got adopted 11 days later and now has a mom and dad! We are so glad the shelter sought us out for a live exit, we are so grateful to Jen saying "yes" to fostering, and we are thrilled that Luna has been chosen for adoption so Jen can continue to help more pets!

Grandpa Rex is safe with us!

Rex was adopted from North Central shelter back in 2014, and yes, there is a puppy picture! His owner was recently arrested, so Rex ended up back at the shelter a MUCH older man.

Volunteer, Deni, hit the road and brought Rex down to FFF. We examined him right away and learned that he has a very large abdominal mass. We also started treating his skin and ear infections. Over the weekend we’re going to make some decisions about how proactive to be about that mass, or whether we should offer palliative care as we get to know him and make sure he’s thriving.

We are looking for an immediate foster placement so he knows the comfort of a home after sleeping for weeks on a concrete floor. Rex is great with dogs, cats, and kids. Please come meet him any day between 10am-3pm.
