Resource Guarding is one of the most misunderstood things in dog training. There’s no one way to handle it. Here’s what I do with a real dominate dog who’s guarding a marrow bone. I hold my ground, I don’t move forward or backwards, I don’t flinch, I’m just there…and I wait. Sometimes looking at him sometimes looking away to see if either helps. Then when he disengages, I still don’t move and then jackpot with chicken (arguably better than the marrow bone). That’s really it. Will this work for every dog, No. But for a dog like this it absolutely worked! And now he knows that walking away still gets him something great. “Protection is noble, resource guarding is obnoxious” Joel Beckman. However both are fixed in a similar fashion - a dominance correction from the owner. This works on an operant conditioning level as well as a natural level.

THE quickest way to reduce overall dominance and dominance aligned issues in a dog is for another dog or person to dominate them, there are real lessons in losing. BUT it can be dangerous and can sometimes make the dog worse if you’re not willing to win the fight. Finding that line is why most trainers don’t even attempt it. We helped this dog in this short period of time but he needs a lot more work.

Any and all “attention” from kids/people both positive and negative reinforces the jumping, so the least amount of “attention” then reinforcing sitting is one of the best ways.
