Resource Guarding is one of the most misunderstood things in dog training. There’s no one way to handle it. Here’s what I do with a real dominate dog who’s guarding a marrow bone. I hold my ground, I don’t move forward or backwards, I don’t flinch, I’m just there…and I wait. Sometimes looking at him sometimes looking away to see if either helps. Then when he disengages, I still don’t move and then jackpot with chicken (arguably better than the marrow bone). That’s really it. Will this work for every dog, No. But for a dog like this it absolutely worked! And now he knows that walking away still gets him something great.
