As the only open admission shelter in the county, the Wake County Animal Center strives to create a humane community for the pets and people that live here. As the only open admission shelter in the county, we take in all stray, abandoned and surrendered pets in Wake County. Together, with community partners, we treat and re-home thousands of homeless animals every year. The Wake County Animal Cen

ter is located at 820 Beacon Lake Drive, near the intersection of I-440 and New Bern Ave. You must travel down Commerce Park Dr. to Beacon Lake Dr. where the main entrance and parking area are located. Wake County Government:

Dennis is a friendly, medium-energy Lab mix who's excited for walks without turning leash time into a circus. He's easy to leash, potty trained, knows "sit" and "down," takes treats gently, and passes other dogs without fuss on walks. In the yard, he'll happily check out passing pups before trotting right back to his person.

The moment you start scratching him, it's like someone flips an off switch-he'll rest his head on your leg and nudge your hand for more. In playgroups, Dennis showed he genuinely wants to be part of the pack, but his social skills are still developing. His enthusiasm can come across as a bit intense, so he'll do best with thoughtful introductions and compatible dog friends. He also needs a home without cats, small dogs, or other small pets. Dennis is ready to reward his new family with loyalty, affection, and plenty of Lab charm.

He is up to date on vaccinations, flea/tick and heartworm prevention, is microchipped, and will be neutered prior to going home. If you have animals at home, we recommend slow introductions. If you have children in your home, we recommend supervision between animals and children at all times.

A small donation can make a big difference. We're running low on some of our most-used enrichment items, including dog treats and canned dog and cat food. Help us restock our shelves and keep our shelter pets happy while they wait for their forever homes.

Chef Boyardee is serving up a recipe for fun! This happy little low-rider is packed with curiosity, zoomies, and a grin that's always on the menu. He'll politely sit and wait at the door...then it's time to GOOOOO! Every outing includes enthusiastic neighborhood inspections and friendly greetings for dogs he passes, though not every pup shares his social style. In playgroups, Chef comes in full throttle, hoping to spark high-energy wrestling matches. He's exuberant enough that he'll do best with a tolerant, playful female who enjoys his rough-and-tumble spirit. This treat-loving chef already knows "sit," catches treats midair, loves fetch and durable toys, and will thrive with positive training to help channel all that joyful enthusiasm.

One of our Wake County Animal Center volunteers created a dog-themed reading corner at her school to help students learn about shelter dogs while making reading fun.

One student quickly became interested in huskies, while another chose Rudder as her favorite.

Blubbleberry is an energetic, fun-loving guy who's always ready to go! He gets so excited for walks that he's still learning to keep all four paws on the ground, but a calm hand resting on his side is like flipping an off switch, helping him settle almost instantly. He already knows "sit" and "wait" and would make an excellent running or hiking partner for an active home. In playgroup, Blubbleberry had a blast playing with female friends, showing off his adorably awkward front-leg play style. He's still polishing his social manners, so he'd thrive with a confident, tolerant female dog who can help keep him on track.
