SNR Medaka USA

SNR Medaka USA Authentic High Quality Japanese Ricefish Store Welcome to SNR Medaka USA! Hello! We never offer fish with deformities such as bent spines or other health issues.

My name is Sarah, and I specialize in raising Japanese medaka right here in North Carolina. If you've found your way to this website, chances are you share a passion for medaka, and I’m excited to welcome you. At SNR Medaka USA, we take pride in offering one of the largest selections of medaka varieties in the United States. The word "medaka" comes from the Japanese words "me" (eye) and "taka" (hi

gh), meaning "eyes looking up"—a perfect description of their elegance when viewed from above. Unlike some sellers who illegally import medaka eggs or engage in smuggling, we strictly adhere to legal importation processes. Medaka eggs are living organisms, and importing them requires proper permits and extensive documentation. That’s why we source directly from renowned Japanese breeders, ensuring authenticity, quality, and high fixation rates. When you purchase from us, you can do so with absolute confidence, knowing that our medaka come from ethical, trusted sources. Thank you for joining us on this journey to bring healthy, high-quality medaka to enthusiasts across the United States! A Few Important Things to Share
At SNR Medaka USA, we deeply respect the authenticity and traditional traits of each medaka strain as defined by their original breeders. While all medaka deserve proper care, experienced fish keepers understand the importance of maintaining high-quality standards. To uphold the integrity of our medaka, we carefully cull individuals that do not meet our strict criteria. Medaka that do not fully qualify for specific lineage traits may be offered as Mixed Sets or Lame (Rame) Sets, but rest assured—every fish we sell is healthy. Pricing & Discounts
We kindly ask that you do not negotiate prices. Our pricing reflects the quality, time, and dedication that goes into raising these fish. If we ever have an excess stock of a particular variety, we will naturally offer sales or discounts. However, requesting a discount upfront can be discouraging, as we take great pride in our work and the care we provide to each fish. Need Assistance? If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly. I personally manage this website, and if you leave a message through email (our email address is in Details page), I will respond as soon as possible. I hope you stay healthy and continue to enjoy your medaka journey! Thank you!

Big thanks to Steve Boggy Botanics

I saw a local listing for a free acrylic tank and spent about a minute debating whether I should message or not… ended up sending one anyway. Turns out I was the first person to message, so he told me to come by. Loaded up the truck and headed over.

Then I got there… and wow. This thing was HUGE. Probably around 200 gallons or so.

Found out he’s into the hobby too, keeping fish, plants, and all kinds of stuff. Didn’t want to show up empty handed, so I brought him a few medaka as a small thank you 😂

Asked if it was okay to take some video, but somehow I completely forgot to film the actual acrylic tank I came for 😭

Anyway, that tank is going to be perfect for making green water under natural sunlight. Really nice day meeting another local hobby person who’s into the same kind of stuff.

Finally shipped out all the medaka from this import!!!

Really hoping they all arrive safely and settle in well 🙏

Thank you again to everyone who supported this import.
I truly appreciate all the support throughout the process.

Now it’s time for me to focus on breeding them out too 😊

龍鱗 Ryūrin

Ryūrin means “dragon scales” in Japanese.

This was one of the strains I really hoped to bring in during this import, so I’m very thankful everything worked out.

Big thanks again to the two people who helped make this possible 🙏

I’ll keep doing my best to share quality medaka here in the US.

Importing fish is never guaranteed, and not every fish will always survive or breed successfully. So far though, these Ryūrin have been doing well, and I’m really hoping they settle in nicely here over time.

Sales for this US bred medaka will probably start around August or so.

The weather here in North Carolina has been pretty up and down lately… it even dropped back into the 50s again today... 😅 so breeding still hasn’t fully kicked in yet.

Just wanted to put this here in case anyone was wondering 🙂

Hi everyone, this is Sarah from SNR Medaka.

I know many of you who keep medaka here in the US have probably run into some challenges. The market is still pretty early, and it’s not always easy to find a wide variety of high quality fish.

That’s actually why I started doing group imports last year. Before that, I was importing fish on my own simply because I fell in love with medaka and wanted to source higher quality lines. As more people showed interest, I decided to open it up publicly.

As many of you probably know, importing medaka isn’t simple, and because we’re dealing with live animals, there’s a greater level of care and responsibility involved. As more people show interest, I do feel that added responsibility, and I always hope that everyone is happy with what they receive. It’s something that motivates me to keep improving each time.

With that said, we are planning a new group import for May.

I do want to mention that some of the photos this time aren’t the best. The breeders are currently busy preparing for the season, so many of the photos were taken quickly without editing, just under natural sunlight. Even if the photos aren’t perfect, I’ve worked with these breeders multiple times, and I’m confident in the quality of their fish. That’s exactly why I continue working with them.

Also, I’d like to ask for a small favor. This is completely optional, but if you join the group import and end up loving the fish, I would really appreciate it if you could share your experience on social media. Whether it’s Instagram, Facebook, or anywhere else, even simple word of mouth helps more than you might think. It’s honestly what makes it possible for me to continue bringing in high-quality medaka.

I’ll keep doing my best to help build a healthy and positive medaka community here in the US, and I hope you all continue to enjoy keeping them.

Thanks for reading.

Kaiji Medaka
カイジ

Originally developed by Masahiro Tanikuni (Asuka Medaka, Nara) before 2017, and officially introduced in April 2020.

This line is known for its Orochi based body with yellow expression in the fins.

There are two types of “Kaiji” depending on how it’s written.

改志 (kanji) – Yellow appears in the dorsal, a**l, and pelvic fins, while the tail fin remains black.
カイジ (katakana) – Yellow extends into the tail fin as well.

At first glance, the katakana type may look higher grade, but it’s actually the opposite.
The kanji “改志” type is considered more rare.

From what I’m seeing, about 99% of mine show yellow even in the tail fin, so these would fall under the katakana “カイジ” type.
