When choosing a vet, your pet deserves someone looking after them who cares about them as much as you do. Since 1996, Dr. Dan and his knowledgeable team have been treating every animal with fur, feathers, or scales. As North Carolina’s first veterinary hospital devoted exclusively to pet birds, small exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, zoo animals, and wildlife, we are the experts that other veterinarians come to for advice. We’re a clinic that loves animals of all shapes, sizes, and species, and we’d love to meet your pet and get them feeling better today.

It’s FRI-YAY! Hampton isn’t just looking cool, he is cool!

Hampton got the spa treatment with a class IV therapeutic cold laser. This treatment can help reduce inflammation and speed healing time for many medical conditions. Give us a call if you’d like to schedule an appointment and discuss how cold laser therapy might benefit your pet!

Happy World Lizard Day! Tell us about your favorite in the comments! We LOVE this Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius) named Banana… unfortunately the feeling isn’t mutual.

Big news! We are so proud of doctors Grace Gallentine and Dan Johnson for their contributions to the betterment of exotic animal medicine. Check out their most recent publication in the “Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine” for a successful novel procedure in a hedgehog (Soft tissue sarcoma of the p***s treated with subtotal penectomy and perineal urethrostomy in a four-toed hedgehog). We are so proud of you!

Can birds get Cyclospora?

You've probably heard about recent cases of Cyclospora linked to fresh produce and may be wondering: Can my bird get sick from eating contaminated fruits or vegetables?

The good news is no. Based on current scientific evidence, birds are not known to become infected with Cyclospora cayetanensis—the parasite that causes cyclosporiasis in people.

That doesn't mean you should skip food safety, though. Fresh produce should always be washed thoroughly before it's served to your bird to help reduce exposure to bacteria, pesticides, and other contaminants.

Bottom line: Wash produce well, offer a balanced diet, and rest a little easier—Cyclospora isn't considered a risk for your feathered companion.
