Chrissy came to us with severe skin issues that had been going on for months. Owners had been trying everything but could not get her skin cleared up. The owners also had itchy lesions as well. We did a skin biopsy and figured out that Chrissy had ringworm! Once appropriate treatment was started, Chrissy started to improve rapidly.

Itchy pet awareness month is in full swing! Recently we had a pup come in with a severe demodex infestation, under the microscope we could see live mites moving along side dead mites. Isoxazoline flea and tick prevention also kills demodex mites! While demodex can be found normally on both human and animals, when overpopulation happens it can cause severe skin irritation and usually indicates an underlying disease process is occurring.

Why are we always asking about flea and tick prevention? This is one way we can easily control allergic triggers in our itchy pets. The isoxazoline class of flea and tick medication also prevents against other parasites like scabies and demodex. It’s a way to rule out these potential triggers when assessing your pet for allergies and other skin conditions.

What does it mean when you see TNTC on your pets chart? This! Too numerous to count cocci (gram positive bacteria) can be seen on this cytology. The entire field of the microscope is covered in tiny dots which are the bacteria. This was a sample taken from a pup with a severe skin infection.

Why are we always asking about flea and tick prevention, specifically isoxazolines? Because it can also treat parasites that cause skin conditions like Scabies (sarcoptic mange), which is highly contagious to both dogs and humans. We got to see some live scabies mites on one of our patients the other day!
