Heading out for a training walk? Bring a secure leash, small treats your dog enjoys, waste bags, and water for longer outings. Having rewards within reach helps you recognize good choices as they happen, like checking in with you or walking on a loose leash.

Save this checklist for your next walk. For help building better leash manners, explore our Leash Walking and Heel Class: https://leaderofthepackdogtraining.org/product/leash-walking-and-heel-class/

Did you know a sniff break can be a reward for your dog? Treats are useful, but a chance to explore that interesting patch of grass can be motivating, too.
On your next walk, reward a few steps of loose leash walking by letting your dog stop and sniff in a safe spot. You are giving them time to explore while helping them learn that walking politely leads to something they enjoy.
Good training starts with understanding what motivates your dog. Learn more about our approach:

Training tip: calm greetings start before anyone steps inside. Practice having your dog settle on a mat away from the entrance while the door is closed. Reward them for staying there, then gradually introduce small door movements. If they get up, make the next attempt easier. Use a secure gate to prevent rushing while your dog is learning. Small steps help build better door habits. Get guidance for everyday challenges with private in-home training:

Training tip: consistency beats intensity. When one person says off and another says down for the same behavior, your dog gets confused and progress stalls. Get everyone in the household using the same cues, and your dog will learn faster and respond more reliably. Consistency is the foundation of every well-trained dog.
