Watch Brian wrangle a giant man eating snake that he found digging this burrow. He barely escaped with his life.
We are still searching for the right person to take Brian’s position this fall. Contact me for details if you’re interested in this kind of work!

WE’RE HIRING!

Brian has not been with me for a very long time, but he has made a huge impact in the time that he’s been here. He still has a few more burrows coming so you’ll still be seeing videos of his builds, but Brian got a new job as a researcher and learning scientist at ASU so he won’t be building burrows for us anymore. I still hope to keep Brian involved with Arizona Tortoise Tubes in the future, but since he’s leaving that roll I will need someone new!

I am looking for someone to build burrows and enclosures, and also help me run and expand Arizona Tortoise Tubes. If you have a passion for animals and have an interest in building burrows and enclosures across Arizona, then please contact me! We will need someone to hit the ground running when the burrow building season begins again in October. Message me on social media, text me, or Email me if you think you would be a good fit and we can discuss the details.

Here’s a new idea we’ve had for our burrows. We used a plastic concrete mixing tub in the back of the burrow. We drill plenty of holes in it for drainage in case water gets in, but the sides of the tub should help keep water out of the back of the burrow. The sides matched up perfectly with the sides of the tube on top so there’s no space for the tortoise to dig out. After the tub is buried there is plenty of dirt inside of it for the tortoise to dig around in but they won’t dig out of the burrow. We also still cap off the back of the tube with pavers to block that escape as well.

We were not told that this customer keeps bees nearby and Brian found out about them the hard way. Watch the video to see the tragic ending. RIP Brian.

Final touches on this burrow include building the berm in front of the entrance to deflect water away, adding dirt around the rocks, and compacting the dirt over the whole burrow.

Brian’s really good and finding water lines with the pick axe so let’s hope he doesn’t find gas or electrical lines on this one.
