If you’ve ever built a burrow for a Sulcata tortoise then you know how challenging it can be. The crew wasn’t able to get the wheelbarrow all the way up to the burrow for this one because it was inside of a small block wall, so they had to throw 4500lbs of dirt and rock over the wall, one shovel full at a time.

This customer reached out to us and wanted to have an area ready so they could apply to adopt a Sonoran Desert Tortoise from the Arizona Game and Fish Department. With time winding down to adopt a tortoise before they go down for brumation, we got to work. We installed walls, a burrow, tortoise edible plants, and a water dish. The customer applied to adopt the tortoise and was immediately approved!

We worked through some rain, but overall had some amazing weather for this build today. This was a 24” tube that’s big enough for two Sonoran Desert Tortoises to use the burrow together. Just in time for brumation!

This is an example of what NOT to do! I want to be clear that this burrow was built with a tube, but we had nothing to do with this job. You always want to make sure your burrow is wide enough for your tortoise to turn around. Luckily this burrow has a wider spot about 7’ down where the tortoise can turn around, but this is still not ok. This shows a lack of experience and knowledge by the builder. This tortoise owner paid a significant amount of money to have this burrow installed for it not to work. Our burrows were tested for years before we ever decided to offer them to the public. We made sure our design worked properly and was safe and functional for the animals. Make sure you see proven examples of successful designs before you hire anyone to build anything for your tortoise.

What burrow design do you prefer? L shape, T shape, or straight? This is why I prefer the straight over the others.

People always ask why we don’t use machinery to dig the burrows. It’s because we wouldn’t be able to have this much fun on a piece of machinery.
