🐷🪨 ROCKY’S ROCKY SITUATION 🪨🐷

Meet Rocky, a pet pig who presented to us for inappetence and vomiting.

Rocky wasn’t historically known to eat rocks, but while his owner was away on vacation, his food had been fed to him on top of rocks. Pigs are naturally curious and are known for eating things rather indiscriminately—and Rocky apparently decided the rocks were part of the meal.

Given his clinical signs, we recommended sedated abdominal radiographs.

And, well… the X-rays speak for themselves.

We found numerous rocks filling Rocky’s stomach, with additional rocks peppered throughout his gastrointestinal tract.

Because of the severity of the findings, along with time and geographic constraints, Rocky was referred for surgical treatment.

❤️ We’re happy to report that surgery was successful! Rocky is now back home and healing up with his family.

Cases like Rocky’s are an important reminder of why a complete diagnostic workup can make the difference between a positive and a negative outcome. Vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, or simply “not acting right” can sometimes be the first signs of a serious problem.

Laminitis, also known as Heat Founder, is a distressing and potentially life-threatening condition that affects our beloved equine friends. It's crucial to be aware of the warning signs and follow proper guidelines to ensure their well-being.

🔍 What is Laminitis?
Laminitis is an inflammation of the laminae, which are the soft tissues connecting the hoof wall to the coffin bone. This inflammation can cause severe pain, lameness, and even rotation of the coffin bone.

🔑 AAEP Guidelines:
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) provides essential guidelines to help prevent and manage laminitis. Some key points include:
1️⃣ Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding obesity in horses.
2️⃣ Gradually introducing new feeds to prevent digestive disturbances.
3️⃣ Monitoring grazing time, especially in lush pastures.
4️⃣ Regular exercise and hoof care.
5️⃣ Immediate veterinary attention if any signs of lameness or discomfort are noticed.

🪚 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿. It should be able to sustain high winds and heavy rain and keep them all dry. Consider building it on high ground to avoid flooding. A livestock shelter should provide enough space for each animal. A general guideline is to provide enough space roughly four times its body size.

🌪️ 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝘀𝘁. With high winds comes blowing dust. To help combat dust, routinely spray down dusty areas and consider installing fabric shade siding for shelters.

📝 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻. While the monsoon season can be unpredictable, it is best to have a plan. Livestock are typically unbothered by storms- those who are prone to stress during storms, should be kept in an enclosed stall. It’s recommended to microchip your livestock in the case that they venture off.

💨 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄. Provide proper ventilation and install fans or open barn doors to keep air moving. Some animals might need sprinklers to keep cool (these can also help with dust management) or to get their hooves wet to keep body temperatures normal.

🌵 Our Arizona summers can be brutal on livestock and other animals. Make sure shaded areas are available and provide an adequate amount of water as well as salt. Dehydration is a common factor when animals are stressed, storms blow in the cooler temps that can make them feel like they don’t need to drink as much. Should your animal present with symptoms of dehydration- contact your vet immediately.
