The Truth Behind These Common Comments:

“I don’t like skunks because they spray my dog.” Or
“I wish they would just stay out of my yard.”

If your dog got sprayed by a skunk, it wasn’t random... and it definitely wasn’t personal.

I get it. It’s frustrating.

But here’s what actually happens.

Skunks give very clear warnings before they spray. They turn to face the threat, raise their tail, stomp their front feet, and sometimes make a huffing sound (a forceful exhale).
Spray is a last resort. If a dog keeps charging after those warnings, the outcome is pretty predictable.

Skunks can spray accurately up to about 10–15 feet and usually have enough musk for several discharges before needing about 7–10 days to fully replenish.

Spraying is metabolically expensive. They do not waste it casually.

They aren’t built to fight, they aren’t fast runners, and they aren’t strong climbers.

Spray is their primary defense.

Now let’s talk about why that skunk was in your yard in the first place.

Most of the time? Food.

Those small cone-shaped holes in your lawn are usually from a skunk pulling out grubs.. Japanese beetle larvae, June bug larvae, and other soil pests that destroy lawns from underneath.
Skunks also eat crickets, grasshoppers, mice, voles, and ground-nesting insects. They’re especially known for digging up yellowjacket nests and consuming the larvae and adults. Their thick fur and skin offer protection from stings, making them effective predators of these colonies.

That “yard damage” is often free, natural pest control.

Late winter through early spring (Peaking in February) is mating season, which means skunks are more active and roaming at night. That’s when encounters increase.

If your dog does get sprayed, skip the tomato juice... it doesn’t neutralize the odor.
Instead, mix:
• 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
• ¼ cup baking soda
• 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap
Apply to dry fur, let sit for about 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. (Do not store the mixture in a closed container.)

Prevention is simple:
Keep dogs supervised or leashed at night.
Use motion lights.
If you see a skunk, back away slowly.
Never corner or block their path.
If the tail goes up and the feet start stomping, that’s your sign to create distance.

Skunks aren’t aggressive. They’re defensive. And more often than not, they’ve helped your yard more than you realize.
