Loudoun K9's training philosophy was born from the belief that there is no "one size fits all" approach to learning for humans or K9s. This core belief is what sets Loudoun K9 apart in both efforts and results. Private Training: We provide custom private training packages where we work directly with you, your family members, and your dog to get happy, fun, and humane obedience & control while eliminating any behavioral problems. Board & Train: At our board and train facility, located in beautiful Western Loudoun County, Virginia, we work on skills including building trust and relationship, e-collar conditioning, and environmental training. This program includes: obedience training, loose-leash walking, off-leash training, door bolting, behavior modification, fear & aggression, potty training, crate training, submissive urination, jumping, and more.

Your dog knows “down.”
But do they understand “down” everywhere?

A dog can be incredibly reliable with a command in one environment and suddenly seem like they’ve forgotten everything the moment you change the picture.

That’s because dogs don’t automatically generalize behaviors the way people do. To us, “down” is simply “down.” To a dog, the context matters.

The room. The surface. The distractions. The distance. The environment. Even the handler!

Dogs learn in pictures, and every new environment gives them another picture to learn from.

The goal is to help your dog collect as many pictures as possible. Practice the same behavior in the house, the driveway, the neighborhood, the pet store, the park, and anywhere else you want that behavior to be reliable.

The more pictures they collect, the easier it becomes for them to understand:

“Oh, I know this one. I’ve seen this before.”

So if your dog suddenly “forgets” a command somewhere new, it may not be stubbornness. They may simply need another picture. 🐾

When we say we believe in relationship based training, we don’t mean letting a dog do whatever they want.

A healthy relationship with your dog is built through communication, consistency, boundaries, engagement, play, and shared experiences.

We want our dogs to understand what is expected of them, trust that we will communicate clearly, and genuinely enjoy being with us.

That means training isn’t just about commands. It’s also about going new places together, playing together, learning how to settle, exploring the world, and giving your dog appropriate freedom.

Structure doesn’t take away from the relationship. If done well, it gives both the dog and the handler a clear way to understand each other.

Our goal isn’t simply a dog who listens. It’s helping more people live full and enjoyable lives with their dogs.

Our dogs should get to play, explore, run, and be dogs. Clear expectations help make those experiences more enjoyable and manageable for everyone.

Not every important training moment looks like a command.

We practice neutrality, so our dogs can experience the world without feeling the need to interact with everything around them.

We practice patience, so they can wait, settle, and handle moments when they don’t immediately get what they want.

And we practice engagement, so the handler becomes someone they naturally look to, follow, and enjoy working with.

Those skills might not look as impressive as a perfect down, stay, or recall, but they are a huge part of creating a dog who can confidently navigate everyday life.
