On the eve of World Rabies Day, let's look back on the past ten years. The world had just set a goal of zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. Washington State University took full responsibility for the rabies control program in northern Tanzania and set out to show it could be done. Today, more than 3 million dogs have been vaccinated, 3.5 million people live in rabies-protected communities, and rabies cases in program areas have dropped by more than 99%. Alpine Animal Hospital is a proud clinic partner, donating just over $12,000 since first partnering in 2019.

Established in 2007 by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), September 28 was chosen to honor the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur, the French chemist who developed the first successful Rabies vaccine.

📣Local PSA: Whitman County Public Health provided us with a local health alert today regarding finding harmful algal blooms along the Snake River between Blyton Landing and Little Goose Dam. Water samples tested positive for microcystins, a type of liver toxin produced by the bacteria in harmful algae. Areas of water with visible scum should be avoided, and areas down current may also have contamination. Keep humans, pets, & livestock out of contaminated water and seek immediate care if exposed to a harmful algae bloom.

Welcome Wednesday - welcome to "Lenny", who we first met at July's Cats' Night Out for his first appointment at Alpine. A unique breed, "Lenny" is a hairless Sphynx. Although he looks like a bit of a tough guy, he's really a big sweetie. 🥹🐾💚
