Benny and Joon are so very precious. They are twins, best friends, and never far from each other. Many people don’t realize that farmed animals form profound, loving, lasting bonds just like humans. They feel deeply, experience joy, and grieve like us.
It’s such a special experience to witness the bond and love that Benny and Joon have for each other.

It’s that time of year again where we follow our residents around with a f***l cup and wait for them to give us a deposit. Several times a year we collect f***s on all of our animals and submit them to the lab to screen for parasites. Many farms will just send in a “group sample” and will treat all of their animals with the same dewormer, assuming if one has parasites that they all do. At Blackbird, we do things a bit differently. We strongly believe in providing individualized health care for our animals, rather than treating the whole herd/flock as a group, whether they are affected or not. Not only does unnecessary deworming cause drug resistance over time in the animals, but it can damage the soil as well. With individualized care, we only treat the specific animals who are affected. We’ve never had a big parasite problem at the ranch because we are diligent about keeping our animal areas clean of f***l material, as best we can, especially in high traffic areas, and we test everyone for parasites several times a year, so it never gets out of our control. Spending a day following an animal around with a f***l cup is not the most fun way of passing our time, but it is very important and allows us to keep our residents healthy.

Our new turkey barn was built this past weekend! We are so excited for our turkey boys, Tank and Mortimer! If you’ve been following us, you know their previous barn was totally destroyed in a 70 mph wind storm recently. We had to do an emergency fundraiser to build them a new house, one that can withstand the crazy winds of the Palouse. We still need to paint it and add some perching inside, but it’s otherwise done and usable now! Thank you SO very much to the many kind and generous folks who donated to Tank and Mortimer’s new home! We are very grateful and couldn’t have done this without you!

We’ve been so fortunate to receive produce donations from , on a regular basis, for our residents. Every year, we spend thousands of dollars on produce, but for the past several months, we haven’t had to spend a penny! This is such a huge savings for us and the animals love the healthy snacks! Thank you Grocery Outlet, we appreciate you!

Hank is one determined pig. He is strong-willed, stubborn, and passionate about food. We’ve been facing a challenge with Hank obsessively trying to steal Jack, the turkey’s, food. Jack and Hank both share the big barn and common yard, so it’s been difficult to figure out a practical solution to make Jack’s food always available to him, but not to Hank. We’ve tried different styles of feeders, creative bowls, hanging options, etc., but nevertheless, Hank always figures out a way to bust into them. A few months ago, we even bought a giant, heavy enclosed turkey feeder, on tall legs, that we were sure Hank wouldn’t be able to get into…and…well, he did. We knew our only choice would be to build a structure around Jack’s feeder, that would allow Jack access, but not Hank, and that’s when we landed on the idea of a “Hank Exclusion Device”. This structure has worked perfectly, and Hank can no longer gut-load himself on turkey food, but Jack can easily enter and feed himself without worry. We’d like to extend a giant thank you to our very handy and talented volunteers, Kevin and Justine, for building it, and mastering the design flawlessly (Justine is also on our board of directors, btw)!
Jack is very happy and loves to hang out in his little fun zone, however Hank is less than thrilled that his chubby b***y can’t fit thru the doorway. His intense grunts of frustration and disappointment were not hard to interpret. Hank has big feelings about this, and he shares those feelings with anyone who will listen. All in all, the project was a huge success, despite what Hank thinks, thanks to Kevin and Justine! Swipe to see the before and after!

This week we recognize our volunteer, Makayla! Makayla comes to the sanctuary 3 times a week to help care for our residents! She is also on our morning team, and is responsible for letting everyone out of their barns for the day while doing health and behavioral observations, feeding, watering and giving meds to our our residents on Tuesday mornings! Makayla is always a huge help, and eager to learn new skills. Her work ethic is top notch and her compassion for the animals is never ending. Thank you for being a valued member of our team, Makayla, we are grateful for you!

Today we’d like to show our appreciation for these two gals! Mother-daughter team, Morann and Mallory, are always such a pleasure to work with and their hard work really makes a difference for the animals. Mallory is a junior in high school and quickly learned every animal’s name at the sanctuary. There are only a couple people who can identify ALL of them, by name, and Mallory is one of them! Mallory and Morann have a special interest and love for the birds, however Mallory has branched out and also enjoys working with the pigs now too. We are grateful for all your hard work and dedication; you truly make a positive difference in these animals lives. Thank you Morann and Mallory!

🦃 We want to thank everyone who donated to our new turkey barn fundraiser. As many of you know, their barn was recently destroyed in a strong wind storm, and we had to do an unplanned, emergency fundraiser to raise funds and buy them a new barn. Our fundraiser was a huge success, it generated more funds than we were expecting! In total, 28 very generous people donated to the barn, and we raised $ 2,685! We have been getting quotes this week for a new barn and pricing some options of building one, as we want to make the best decision for a sturdy, safe barn for our turkey boys, Tank and Mortimer. 🦃
We used this fundraiser as an opportunity to have a drawing for a reusable tote bag, handmade from repurposed animal feed bags. Every $10 donated was an entry into the drawing. We were going to draw three names, but the fundraiser was such a success that we decided to double that and draw 6 names! The six people who were randomly drawn from their donation entries, who will be receiving the tote bags are: Paula K., Rebecca C., Pamela S., Kathi H., Barbara S., and Mary P.
Thank you all for helping our turkey boys, we are truly grateful.
