It was almost surreal how rapidly our cat of only 4½-year-old went down once we noticed her labored breathing on a Thursday night. After Friday morning x-rays, the vet told us pleural effusion (fluid buildup outside her lungs) was preventing her from taking full breaths and this had been caused by long-term heart disease. They drained the fluid and put her on beta blockers. However, there were complications and she suffered a saddle thrombosis stroke, ending up paralyzed below the waist. We had her euthanized 3 weeks ago.
